Drain entrances. Location location location!

Starting my own search in this silly town, I was almost sure i would find nothing large enough to explore extensively. Let me start off by saying that i was wrong. I want to outline some basic means of locating large drainage systems around your area as well as gaining easy access to them.

First thing's first, ask around. The best people to ask are people that have lived in the town for awhile and would have had nothing better to do than roam around whatever god forsaken place you happen to live. Before there were computers, there were wet tunnels to smoke pot cigs, tag shoot the shit in while ditching school or just getting away from home. These places, at least in my city seem to have been covered even though most kids don't want to do anything besides sit in front of the television or computer. Soooooo

1. summary of first step- ask older people in the area, possibly the homeless, they wander a lot.

Another helpful resource is your city information. I found most my information on a city website about storm water issues. The last paragraph listed all of the local strom water projects for the last few years. Your city will keep records of all the systems they put in because those things cost a lot of money and are often voted on and built in house. So local government is a good place to find information on any sort of exploration that concerns city infostructure.

2. summary of step 2. Your city knows, just look.

The always helpful google earth is a great way to find possible spill off areas. Often city drainage empties into scummy lakes or unassuming lagoons/swamps. Google earth will often disclose a lot of information if you know what to look for. "What the heck am i looking for" you may be thinking. Well, often as i said, swamps, lakes etc. Main streets also are good places to look. larger streets that come to an abrupt end into a wilderness area are worth a gander.

3. summary....the mighty google earth...duh

Yet another helpful tool is to understand your areas waterflow. Drive...walk around in the rain when you get a chance and observe different parts of town and where the water flows accordingly. Once you have a general idea of the waterflow in your area you can always revert back to google earth, and with that heightened understanding of waterflow/elevation you can look for lower elevation areas where that water would flow, and spill into.

4 summary...a river runs through it....which way and where.... whatever.

Entry should be easy enough as it seems most covers have to have an opening in the grate for the average joe to slip through. I'm not sure but this may be a safety regulation incase someone did get stuck in the drain from another entry method adn was washed to the grate. They would have to have a way out. The cage covering the outlet for the drain i explored had 1 ft by 1 ft squares which in once place was cut to afford fairly easy entrance. The cuts looked too clean to be done by anyone other than the city, and no vandalism what so ever was discovered in the near 4 miles of pip we walked.

5. summary, generally, entrance should be easy...should be.

I just decided to try draining the other day and managed to get pretty far into it already. thought i would share conclusions i had come to with people

thanks.

If you don't mind getting your tootsies a little wet, I highly recomend it.

Some things I would like to add.

Take some time to really appreciate the sounds and acoustics of the drainage system. Investigate even smaller tunnels and just take your time. Some pipes have amazing acoustics and will keep you amused for quite some time. I found one that created the most amazing echo effect I have ever heard.

Also, turn off your flashlight here and there and just look around. After a short while you'll be able to see the manholes letting light filter down to the drain here and there. The atmosphere is something to take in and enjoy.

What is your town like?
Got any pics of your drains?

Draining is probably one of my favorite things. There just aren't many around here... that I know of. I've found some but none are too long.

Not giving up though.

Good post.

My grandparents live in one of those gated communities. Whenever me and my lil bros. go over their we go draining. The best place to find and enter drains in that kind of place is to go to the golf courses. They usually have ponds and such with easy entry into drains. Although the chance of getting caught is pretty decent unless your careful considering that people who live their are not hesitant to call security.

So if you have a gated comuninity near you or even a golf course give it a look.

Trying to win hearts and minds, but willing to splatter them if neccesary.

Yeah golf courses and the likes usually have good drainage systems nearby as they are for assholes pleasure. So a lot of money goes into the area.

With subdivisions going in oh so often, be sure to watch the size of pipes and placement when one goes in. You may find a suitable place to drain after the bastard goes in

Good advice m'Lord. Yeah, the best way to find drains is to find creeks and follow them in both directions as far as possible, on foot or on a map.

You can't fall off a mountain.

Following creeks is usually enjoyable even if you don't find any drains. Some lakes have some pretty neat spillways in them, a creek by my grandfather's house starts as a spillway from a private lake. It is also fed from a few fields. The best part of that creek is the tunnel in the middle of nowhere with "AC DC rules" sprayed in it. Valparaiso's highschool has a dam in their little nature area that i found rather interesting. Climbed into part of that awhile back and then followed the creek about a mile down from it to find nothing. It's hard to find many people willing to trudge, crawl, creep through drainage pipes and the likes, but i have a good friend who doesn't seem to mind it at all. I also recently stumbled upon my cities water treatment area that has a lot of tunnels and things in the area while out with a friend looking for a venue for his next party. You just have to kind of get an eye for what you want to find and you can just run into it when you're not looking.

Railroad tracks near towns often, if followed, can lead you to a stream or river leading to a drain. especially if said tracks are raised above their surroundings. Also, railroad bridges for streams tend to be kind of neat either way.

80 percent of the time the drains in my city are completely covered with bars. The only way in is through a manhole cover.

Bottle jack / scissor jack.

Interesting thread, definitely check out <predators> Approach to Draining document. It's virtually required reading for all drain explorers.
