|  | | | Is there any cheap and easy way to do this? The incandescent bulb it came with just isn't bright enough. I checked http://www.pocketlights.com/ledbulbs.asp, but the quoted prices are more than I actually paid for the light in the first place. Suggestions welcome!

| | | | Go to Walmart they have the LED upgrade for 18 bucks. Its drops right in just like any other bulb. Make sure you buy the one that is specifically for the 4D model.

Get the 2D Maglite with LED. The 4D isn't all that much brighter. The difference is the runtime and the 2D has more than enough runtime for just about any exploration you'll do at once. (about 20 hours on 2D batteries).

Pick up a Dorcy "METAL"... they are basically LED Surefire knockoffs, but they are really bright, durable, and take AAA batteries. Much better than a Mag any day.
I love mine, I have two. They are $15 at any walmart.

Batteries are somewhat expensive (CR123x2) but you get 10 times what a led light gives you and the light is yellowish so it makes better light painting than a led light. It's also great to focus your camera in the dark without using a flash

I have something like that. Not very useful. Unnecessarily bright, lame runtime from expensive batteries. For night time exploration, you usually want something just enough to let you see by with minimal impact on your night vision.

Maglite LED runs very hot. It dims down to around 40% the original output in the first five minutes and stays there to keep itself from melting down. Very long lasting, but its HUGE.

LED's are good for short distance flooding (which is most of what i need my light for) but there are times when i'm doing infil in completely dark environment and the darkness just swallows up my LED beam. times like this i bust out the high power incandescent to cut through the darkness. there are plenty of good LED makers out there. for a good incandescent i would go with surefire or scorpion, they're worth the money.

As for other lights, I was in Target the other day and was pretty impressed with the Inova line of LED light systems, all made in the USA.
