| | | Anyone use flashlight holders? < on 8/7/2006 8:35 PM >
| | | I have found in abandoned locations I like to keep both hands free just in case. This leads me to put my flashlight on the back of my hand through my gloves. Do any of you out there have any flashlight holders you like to use to keep the hands free ? I was thinking of making a nylon one to hold a couple of LED penlights.

Agreed. However, I do have several velcro strips on my gear vest, and several of my lights have velcro on them, so I can stick them on my vest for temporary spot illumination.

Webgear is nice, always a place and a way. The small LED lights work well like this. Right angle lights are handy for this too. I'm not keen on headgear other than a bush hat.

| | | Umm, It depends what you're doing. I don't like climbing a ladder or up rungs behind someone with a 3D maglite in a ring. I'm always afraid they'll knock it down on me. In buildings they are useful enough so you can have free hands and keep track of your mag. Generally I think headlamps are much more convenient unless there's a lot of moisture in the air.

| | | I've always wanted one of those one-size-fits-all headlamps that mount any flashlight on their sides. Where can I get those?

| | | normally I have one of those crappy military style L lights with a red filter mounted on the shoulder strap of my pack.. That way it's always pointed the way my torse is pointed.. then I normally also have secondary flashlights I actually look around with in my hands.. the reasons I do this are very simple, if you are moving and looking at something the L light will always show whats ahead of me even if I don't have my other light in front of me.. Also if I need my hands I can pocket the secondary and not have to worry about running into crap.. I found this works very well.. Before I used to have two 2AA maglites, one with a red filter the other white light, both were tethered to a biner on my belt so I could freely drop then at any point and had a quick option of color.. Now I have a Hellfire X-11 flashlight which can be mounted on top of my other shoulder.. I need to check to see if they make red filters for them yet..

| | | I agree with DC. A loose light on a ladder is an accident waiting to happen. Once out in Billings a guy dropped a flashlight out of his pack that was open and if anyone was on the ladder 50 ft below him, they would have had a bad day.

| | | That L-light Pravus mentioned still seems to be a pretty good choice. They're on the cheap at surplus stores and seem to take a sufficient beating. If you're like me and a bicycle is your main transport, then Halogen/LED bikelights seem to do the trick. I particularly like those ones that mount to any and all helmets. Kind of like a cheap imitation of a miners helmet. For now, I don't use any of that. Just a two D-cell, Maglite that I carry in a nylon belt hanger/holster, and my Cateye Opticube that usually stays on my handlebars. I hardly ever get off the bike anyway.

Happens all the time with me. As much style as the holder adds.. they're not very effective if you're doing anything other than walking. They're very easily pushed up against your thigh, and risk falling out of the holder, and breaking.
