| | | -Don't despair that your shoes cost more than your camera. -See this article about Alex Majoli, an award winning photojournalist who only shoots with P&S cameras. -His reasons for preferring them are very similar to reasons why UE enthusiasts can find them such useful tools (vice large and expensive DSLRs) -See the Article here: http://www.robgalb...sp?cid=7-6468-7844 -Here are couple of his pictures:

| | | Neat article. I should try developing some of the techniques he uses, since all I ever use is a digital point-and-shoot camera.
I haven't lost my mind. It's backed up on disk somewhere. |

| | | Thanks for sharing this great article. I've used some of those techniques with my little digital before due to similar limitations, and yeah, the results can astound. His extended portfolio is really quite amazing.

| | | The Olympus C-8080 is no dinky point and shoot. In it's day this 8 megapixel went for close $800 dollars. For action shots, and lower light levels it's performance is not so great.

True, but it would be easy to take a bad pic of the same subjects.

| | | I happen to be the proud owner of an Olympus C-8080, and lemme tell ya, it's more than just a dinky point and shooter. This thing is an 8MP picture taking machine! It's low-light performance is a little lacking, but that can be made up for with longer exposure times (up to 15 seconds programmable, indefinitely with the remote). I have taken pictures of the stars with this thing. It's kinda bulky to be taking on UE trips though. It's considered an "advanced" camera, as opposed to a basic one i suppose. And this camera actually listed closer to $1000, not 800.

| | | Great read, thanks for posting. Changes my opinion of Point & Shoots a great deal. You still won't catch me in the studio with one, but I might pull mine out and give it another chance to prove itself. It's nice to have something that doesn't require effort to take everywhere.

| | | Once again proves that it's not the camera it's the person operating it that makes the photo. You can have top of the line equipment and still take crap photos. Great article

| | | No joke, eh? Browse through Flickr and you will see exactly what you just described! There is a LOT of high-end gear taking a LOT of crappy and poorly composed macro shots of flowers and WAYYYYY too many sunsets shot @ ISO 400. Glad you found it useful.

This is true, but taking bad shots and seeing what you did wrong is how you learn. Full manual mode is a lot of fun, instructive, and the only way to capture quit a few shots. I've been playing with this more lately. There's always "green mode" on Canon's D-SLR's if you get desperate!
