| | | I have driven by these a few times and finally stopped the car, forded the river and had a look. A little nerve wracking given the current's strength and the fact the digital camera I was balancing above my head wasn't mine. At least the slime on the rocks held. There appeared to be some sort of drive leading away from the place, but I cannot figure out where it went. The area seems to be entirely surrounded by mountains and the river. Perhaps a bridge used to exist? Whatever the case the site is mightily overgrown now and my shins would have appreciated some pants. Also, the undergrowth has left only two structures easily visible from the road, there are at least two more shed type buildings I took pictures of. Does anyone know what it might have been? My guess is a store of some kind.
This last picture is a burned out gas station near-by. The fireplace amuses me.

| | | The gas station was Sumallo Lodge, which operated back as long as the Hope-Princeton Highway was open, I believe (1949). The original station was located along the old road (which now dead ends) - this was the second Lodge. It burned down this year, in January or February - under suspicious circumstance. Used to be a place I looked forward to on my road trips to the interior - it broke up the drive from Hope to Princeton, with a decent restaurant, a place to get gas, and a spot to sit and watch the traffic come and go. What a shame. I stopped to see the cabins too. Couldn't figure out how to get across to them - where's the way across the river?

| | | There is no 'across' the river, just through the river. I parked, scrambled down the bank and waded. If you have a waterproof case or no camera then swimming might be better. The current is strong and the rocks are slippery, so good luck. ALso, if right beside the road doesn't excite you there is a larger pullover a ways up and Sumallo rest area beyond that.
