Get a Magcharger. That thing is insanely bright compared to any regular battery Magnlites. It's about the size of a 3D Mag with a 200 lumen output and a battery life of two hours.

You either want something really bright or something just bright enough to get by. I thought about buying an L2T Mark mentioned, but I don't think its worth fifty bones.

People, not here put there life on the line all the time with flashlights. To include law enforcement, military, firefighters, etc.

The only companies that have innovated and have made good lights that put maglite to shame are

Surefire - overpriced as hell
Pentagon - decent lights little less then surefire
streamlight - which has jumped leaps and bounds ahead
fenix - The best priced AA lights for the bang

In my opinion streamlight and fenix are leading producers currently.

With all the dangerous places we go into 50 bones is far cheaper then a 6 cell maglight that puts out crap for light in comparison for 30-35.

I don't need a light I can signal ships in a heavy fog with, just something utterly indestructible. Maglites are the only one I've found that can keep up with the battering I give them. I've dropped mine off a tower crane onto a generator, dropped it down several flights of concrete stairs, slammed it in a car door (and wrecked the door) and used it as a hammer, and it's still as good as the day I bought it (except for a few dents and nicks).

Don't buy a C-cell one though, the batteries run out way quicker than the D-cell ones. I get enough light out of a 3 cell mag, and if I really wanted more light I'd buy an LED conversion for it.

Also, can you ever deny the awesome "I could put a hole in your skull" factor of a maglite? I'd like to see you do THAT with your cigar-sized tactical flashlight.

I'll add this.

Rechargable maglights suck ass. Especially for what we are doing.

You drop that thing once and the bulb is gone.

I have had a Streamlight Stinger for the last couple of years and it's on the same bulb and battery. I have dropped it at least 100 times.

It kicks ass.

It's smaller than a rechargable maglite.

It takes massive beatings from my clumsy ass.

YMMV but I like mine.

Ohh, and I turned it on and threw it in a 12' pool for several hours. It had about three drops of water in the lens.

Mark don't forget about Stanley's AA LED light (now in tripod version). I think it takes like 9 aa's.

I like the light; I don't like the feel, the made in China thing, and the plastic body. You could select the number of cells it was running on. Cool.
I liked this concept because AA's used to be free to me; I was waiting for the maglite "60 aa" light, but it never happened.

Bag on mag all you want but in many cases it comes down to "feel".
They never said they were the brightest; that's why there is even an upgrade bulb. Now Mag even offers a 3 watt LED. Although the Nite Eyez version is a much better deal at 8 bucks and works with all the varying battery sizes.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

That is a cool light. Not sure if I like it, but it does show promise. Little larger than I like for a carry LED light. I do like the variable brightness, and the fact that it's AAA fed.

what's with the hating on Mag? I'm sure the Fenix L2T is nice, but it doesn't justify $50.

posted by MarkCompare candle power with Maglites:
Solitaire w/1 AAA: 4 - 6 lumens
Two AA: 10 - 12 lumens
Two C or D cell: 16 lumens
Three C or D cell: 24 lumens
Four C or D cell: 32 Lumens

"Mind you, those are optimum brightness levels on FRESH batteries. Your actual output will be less for the life of the batteries. The Fenix L2P is 46 Lumens on two AA's. YOU NEED A SIX CELL MAGLITE WITH CONVENTIONAL BULB FOR 48 LUMENS. "

Where did you get the above info? They're grossly understated. Mag's official specs appears rather overstated. Truth lies somewhere in between.

Got that info off CandlePower.com doing some searches. Lumans are mesured from the "heat" or light intensity. Candle power is volume of light. Where they mesure Lumans can varry its strenght. I can tell you though the maglite doesn't have crap compared to G2's the base line surfire.

Two companies I really cant stand maglite, and surefire.

By the way fenix is giving a 5% discount for a damn good light, and not all the models are 50$, plus its cheap batteries unlike alot of the better lights.

Maglite

1. Maglite because so many believe its the cat's ass, but in reality the bulbs are fragile, the light bodies are ok, and the Lumans are terrible. They use to be the best thing on the market when I was born. The luman are that low, there is a difference between candle power, and lumans. Lumans in my opinion are better for mesureing what you can see.

2. When the fire and police have moved from a company, they have not inovated enough to keep up with competition.

3. Any aluminum bodied light with batteries in it will be durable, and although maglite can take abuse, the side switches can't.

4. They aren't waterproof what so ever.

5. People on here are willing to risk there life with a cheap light because someone says they are good without research. Our hobby can in some cases be very light dependant for safe travel through large buildings day or night. Why half ass things when you could get killed.

6. Many people who "drop" the light have the LED conversion so the bulb doesnt beak. 20 for a light plus 9-15 for a bulb brings you to 30-35

Surfire

1. The G2 is a poor flashight to rough house with.

2. Bulb assemblies are expensive and proprietary.

3. Any of there good lights are very costly.

4. 123 batteries are expensive, unlike AA's C's and D's

5. 1 Hour run time may not be enough time to get your ass out of the frying pan, and carrying extra batteries can be a issue. Which is the only reason why I like the maglite over say the G2. Although if you use the light as it's intended the life of the light can last several hours, most people don't know how to use one properly though.

I've had two 2D Maglites fail while exploring steam tunnels. Both times, a part of the switch just crapped out. That's enough for me to lose all faith in Maglites.

I occasionally use a highly modified (TWOJ Luxeon III regulated at 1000 mAh, powered by 8 AA batteries) 2D Maglite, but you'd better believe that I carry multiple backup lights!

all right Ive posted my mind on flashlights before Ive had a great many and used them in all sorts of rough conditions not just exploring heres some tid bits

Kel Lite was the first "cop" light designed to thump heads MAG LITE came later, was heavier but still had similar flaws

(if you drop any incandescent while it burning its prone to break the filament)

The halogen bulbs break even easier, and draw 2X more juice. Ive had dozens of MAG LITES inc LED conversions which are great but about half of them had switch failures or problems. Good news is I called MAG Instrument Corp they sent me new switches. Free! Also had 2 that had messed up bulb sockets one had partial threads missing! Their quality control has gotten worse.

I have two different Surefires. One is plastic (Nitrolon) it sells for less than $30 and I love it its light carries in your pocket without going off its as bright as you can get from 2 123As and for plastic its essentially indestructible.

I have a Pelican M6, wow what a disappointment. I paid $40 on sale the beam/reflector is distorted, the switch has no click (I really hate that) while Ive done no real test it seems to eats batteries faster than the Surefire and it WILL go off in your pack, in its own holster or your pocket if you dont lock out the tail switch 5 or 6 full turns (then it dont fit in its holster and you have to re=screw with it to turn it on) If it goes off in your pocket youll know it in about 1 minute, well there is one good thing, the holster has a place for spare batteries.

If you dont need a weapon light check out Princeton Tec 1W Luxeon 6AA model I got two of these been using one for a year on the original batteries, it uses a bezel switch which some dont like but its been dropped been submerged in salt water etc I love it.

I think it really depends on what you would normally be exploring. i just use a AA maglite with the LED upgrade for most places. It gives off plenty of light for a house and most enclosed areas. Its small enough to fit into your pocket or on your belt. Of course in huge warehouses or big open spaces its weaker, but how much light do you really want to be giving off? You get a 5d and you might as well carry a club. I think its too big, just my opinion.

This is your life... and its ending one minute at a time.

Maglite 2 -3 cell w/led conversion as bright as streamlight/pelican - pelican is tougher & lighter - BUT nothing beats having a aluminum body to give option to hit something, also w/led conversion really tight pattern.

The CR123s arn't THAT bad if you shop around.. Although I will agree that having something that uses normal batteries is nice because most of those accept rechargeable.. Hopefully they will make 123s that are rechargeable that won't blow out flashlights soon.. Personally I am not that big of a fan of alot of the brands people say are great because I more or less refuse to buy a plastic light.. I don't like the feel of it and I always feel like I am going to break it, they just feel 'cheap'.. Now I know they have come a far far way with plastics, it's just a personal tick.. Personally I like surefires because they have a good solid feel to them and they are rather small.. I was going to buy one then I opted for the Hellfire X-11 it's about the size of a 2AA Minimag.. It's insanely solid, totally water proof and is designed to take more of a pounding then you could hope to offer in UE.. It costed around $100 which is a bit for a flashlight but it's still cheaper then alot of surefires, but I came on some extra cash and decided I wanted to blow it on something..
* Length: 6-11/16” with breaker points and 6-7/16” without.
* Weight: 11 oz.
* Operation Temperatures: -10° F. to +130° F.
* Water resistance: (6) Viton O-rings at all joining surfaces makes the X-11 a completely waterproof unit.
* Batteries: (2) 123 series 3-volt Lithium or (1) 6-volt Lithium battery stick.
* 150 Peak Lumens

But alas people will always support thier brands.. Personally I think I'll always carry a normal 2AA minimag just as a ditchable light I don't care too much about and I don't think I'll ever buy a plastic light..

I personally carry a 3D maglite, but more so if someone gets too close I can beat them with it, since I don't have many other forms of protection being a female. There are better, more powerful lights out there, yes, but it just depends on what you really want. I don't like extremely powerful lights as it can give away location, which is why I rarely use lights unless I have to.
