| | | I recently found an old house/barn in the area and while exploring it I came across something wierd. Towards the back of the barn we found what appears to be something resembling a home-made (sp?) jail cell. After giving it thought for some time I could not think of any rational answers to what this could be. What do you guys think it is?

| | | It's Harry Potter's new bedroom! Seriously, though, I was once in someone's basement and we broke down the door of a similar room. It had been kept locked by the woman's late husband, and she never found the key. Inside, we found lots and lots of pot. And pot plants (dead, of course). Also, several home-made bombs. So, you never know. That could have been someone's little pot palace or a secret place to make plans of terrorism.
I haven't lost my mind. It's backed up on disk somewhere. |

there was no means of cooling. It was in the backroom of a barn. Through the workshop. With nothing inside but that chair. and once the door was shut. there was no edge like a normal door. it slid right into place and was flush with the rest of the sheet metal

| | | In a barn ... all that metal tells me it's a place to keep things that rats and mice like to eat. They'll eat through damn near anything, including wire, but sheet metal provides more of a challenge. The chair might have been moved in there for reasons unrelated to the purpose of the room. :: [last edit 7/20/2006 2:43 AM by :: inuk - edited 1 times]

I like this theory. It would definitely be a good place to store sacks of feed away from rodents.

| | | The condition of the wood makes it look new(er). Having spent plenty of time on farms I also think it's a room for storing feed. It wouldn't much of a prison with that dinky latch. Unless, of course, you were storing kids.

That does make a lot of sense. But, why would they have put the vent in the door? Also, why would the vent have been reinforced so strongly?

| | | Well it wouldn't make sense if it was a store room to keep pests away since the vent seems very accessible to insects. That also seems to rule out the idea of a cooler since the vent would let all the cold air out...how about a dry place for firewood or a safe house for incase of fire? I dunno...I'm just as puzzled as you are.

The vent appears to be 1/2" expanded metal. I don't see it too reinforced, just solidly built. Seriously, rats and mice can do incredible things for food, so perhaps it's not overbuilt at all.

Yes insects, there you go. A hundred thousand flies are going to carry off your pumpkin seeds and dog kibble. Seriously though, I doubt insects are going to care, and they're certainly not a concern from the angle of major contamination of the owners seed/food supply. My presumption is that this vent is to allow any moisture to escape, thus avoiding the mildewing, molding or rotting that would occur with organic items stored in a sealed space. Seeds should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place ... like say ... this room! It's not a cooler/cellar either. To be most efficient they are commonly dug into the ground, either from a basement, cellar, or just plain hole in the ground with a door. It's also overbuilt for keeping firewood, and being made OF WOOD is perhaps the worst possible place to be in a fire. I'm sticking with my original seed room theory. ::
