| | | About a year ago, I was scouting a small abandoned building to find an entry point, but all the doors were chained shut and there were no broken or unlocked windows. The doors were glass so they could have been easily shattered to gain entry, but the place had been virtually untouched for at least 10 years and I didn't want to mess anything up. I gave up and was walking down the path to the main road when I saw an elderly lady working in her flower garden. I thought it couldn't hurt to ask her about if she knew anything about the building as it was nearby her house and went for it. It turned out that she owned the property that it was located on and had keys for the doors. After a short chat about what I was doing there and why anyone would be interested in an abandoned building, she decided to give me a "tour" of the place. To my surprize she was very talkative and gave me a history lesson about the place and pointed out various things I would have overlooked on my own. Needless to say it was one of the coolest explorations I have ever done, and I made a friend in the process. Unfortunately, two months ago the place was destroyed by a small forest fire that ravaged the area. This might not work in an urban area, but I live in a pretty rural location so people tend to be more friendly. If all else fails, just ask people around the area, they might not have access, but you can still hear neat stories about the history of the building.

Great point. I have used that technique a few times now and it makes the actual act of UE'ing so much more interesting because most of the time I wander around inside saying if these walls could talk what would they say.

| | | I usually do the classic scouting and always have at least one other person with me...maybe film/photograph random parts of the place from a distance. 90% of the time we go to places, it's overnight, so if it isn't fenced in, we'll get out of the truck and walk around the building (or at least one of us will). About half of the time (if the property is fenced in) we'll go right through the fence and try to find a way to get into the place right away that same night. Otherwise...just come back another night. Going onto the property, we usually stay close if entry is in a "open" area, or go through woods. Move quick and low (if needed). I'll use Window's Local Live as well to look at a place (granted it isn't up to date but still good enough) to look for possible entries.

| | | I like to throw gas and dry leaves/branches on one of the side walls. Once that's weakened the mortar enough I take the bulldozer (borrowed from a construction site earlier so as to historically preserve it) and RAM through the wall. Then, before the fire spreads to consume the building, I take a lot of photos and post them on this website. It's worked very well for me.
i have never taken a photograph in my life exploring should be done at home, where it's safe |
