Lets see your gear.

I'd be interested to see what setup of gear, gadgets, and other random stuff everyone takes with them when they're exploring.

My personal setup consists of.

1. 2D maglite with LED upgrade. (Primary Light)
2. Dorcy Metal Gear 1W Luexon LED light. (Backup Light)
3. Keys (I gotta start my car somehow) Key chain flashlight (Backup/Backup Light)
4. CRKT M-16 Pocket Knife (For cutting, Prying, and general Knifery)
5. Leatherman Micra(Screwdrivers, Tweezers, Skissors, and other cool tools)
6. Garmin eTrex Legend GPS. (Sometimes you need to know where you are)
7. Cell phone. (Call for help / Backup digi cam)
8. Bic Lighter (For when all your lighting goes to crap, or you need to start a campfire.)
9. Canon GL1 (Videotaping, Duh)
10. Not pictured, Digital camera. (I had to take this picture with something)

And the one that I will probably get the most crap about.
When the situation allows.

11. Glock 20 (Obvious Reasons)

well to start off, why the gun? you have a knife...if you're afraid of crazy hobos or something, why not carry mace?

i dont know for sure, since i've never had it happen, but i assume if you get caught trespassing by a cop, and you're carrying a gun, he may not take kindly to you. who knows.

what i carry depends on where i go. i dont own a respirator yet. i've borrowed a friends. but i am about to purchase one

a general list includes:

CMG infinity ultra pocket flashlight (size of lipstick)
leatherman micra (i actually lost this i need a new one)
4xD-Cell Maglite
first aid kit
nikon coolpix 4600
pen and paper (sometimes i map the places out to help others)
canon EOS 630
sometimes cigarettes or cigars (for the vagrants)
cell phone
a friend

occasionally waterproof boots, wrenches, and screwdrivers

I knew I would get the "why the gun?" question.

Not everywhere I go is in the city. And in the Boonies or in the woods there are 4 legged as well as two legged predators. Besides that I carry everyday anyway so I might as well carry while exploring. And as long as I'm not doing anything illegal i.e. trespassing in posted places which I rarely if ever have to do, then cops aren't an issue, it's legal. In SC No sign = Not trespassing, as long as a place is open and your not breaking in your fine. If the owner or the police ask you to leave and you refuse then its trespassing. I guess you could run into a belligerent owner but that would happen wether or not you were concealing a gun.
And in the words of Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that".

If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy

I also carry (legally, of course), but not into many locations for the same reasons you listed. I have the Glock 23. How difficult is it to conceal that big grip?

Love that form-fitting paddle holster.
Looks like something from a drug-crime movie.
Not to mention that's Leons gun from Resident Evil 2 & 4.
Only reason I don't carry is because guns are currently out of my price range right now.

It is very rare you need a gun especially in the country. Best check your state's penal code very carefully. In many states carrying a gun while committing a crime (trespass)is a mandatory 5 year sentence. Things can go wrong in ways that are impossible to foresee, the gun is a liability that can turn what would be a warning into felony charges. Never pack on federal park land unless permitted.

It's not that hard. The paddle holster keeps the gun pretty close to your body, and I wear a BDU Jacket for concealment and for all the extra pockets.

Its one of those rare occasions that I am trying to be prepared for. You never know when one will happen. Before I started carrying I had to take a class on the law relating to carrying a firearm, and I have done my own reasearch in addition to that. I carry whenever It is possible to do, and while I would encourage anyone who would like to legally carry to do so I would also suggest that they get some training and study the law carefully. Also Always carry responsibly. The right to keep and bear arms is one of many rights that we in America are blessed to have. Exercise all of those rights with pride and personal responsibility.

You can not pack leally if your committing a crime. Any criminal charge will bring the possibility of having the mandatory sentence gun law invoked. Very bad idea to pack while exploring except under special circumstances.

Golden rule of gun safety: NEVER point a gun at someone unless you intend to shoot them.

I got in trouble once while in school, I pointed a glue bottle at someone. She saw me across the room and came running over to grab it from me.

My gear:

  • Headlamp
  • Camera
  • Myself
  • My day-to-day stuff (Stuff I always carry on me:Wallet, cell phone, pda, ipod, a loaded .357)

I'm not really the kind of guy that carry 40lbs of stuff on him

(note: the .357 is just a joke)
