That's a very cool story. I looked at your pics, it sounds/looks like it was a good trip. Did you enjoy it overall? Is it something you think would be worth doing again?

It's definitely not something that would make up a good "vacation." Trainhopping is more of an escape, and everybody knows running away from your problems is bad. ;)
But I guess everyone hops for different reasons. Some people spend many years riding freight because they don't have anywhere to go. Others want to travel and have no money...

Is trainhopping "worthwile?"
Of course Not! It is dangerous and stupid! I'm by no means an expert, but I know that much.

But still, if whenever you see a train coming you stare at it hypnotised untill it's out of sight, and if you're stuck at a dead end job you hate, and have no true friends (except vodka on rocks,) and think you've got nothing to loose... - then heck, trainhopping's way better than most other things people do in an attempt to give their life meaning.

Hope this answers your question...

I really liked the story of your trip. Good for you! Saddlin' up a buzz-buzz is a blast, but not gettin' killed is the trick. You may not be an expert, but you know more then most.
He-he. Music for that frame of mind, Escaping that is, courtesy of Jimi Hendrix, the master of electric guitar. Hear My Train A Comin' is the song, and the definitive version can be found on the Rainbow Bridge sound track, you will need it from vinyl record though as the DVD's soundtrack quality is lacking. Perhaps it has been released again on remastered DVD, or CD. It rocks for 11 minutes and it's worth the trouble to get. It was recorded at Berkeley in '67 I believe.

Sounds like fun to me. But I lead a very boring life.

Perhaps, but I'm very attached to all of my body parts!

I would be cool to buy an old caboose, fix it up and ask the freight companies if you can connect to a train. You could make it driveable so you can move it around when necessary.

My dream job is to be a train engineer. It's a pretty rough live from what I've read though.

Buy a caboose, yes. But what kind? A bay window, cupola, etc? Hook one up to the UP or other freight company? Likely not. Unless you have thousands of $$$ to give them inexchange for their space and time on the rails. It's like purchasing realestate or land, but moving. I've asked the same question to a former yard manager of UP here in San Jose, CA. Got a negative for hooking it up, let alone accessing their freight.

As for becoming an engineer, why not? Amtrak is hiring and you have to start as a conductor then become an engineer. A conductor get's paid about $25/hour, and an engineer starts at $30/hour and up. They provide training and all of the provisions you need to accomplish the tasks given.

I've seen engineers as young as 22 years old on Amtrak and ACE (a local commuter company). Go for it! I'd do it in a heart beat if I didn't have my recording studios to manage here...

I tried to get on with NS but I didn't make it through the hiring session. I really don't know why though. I too would love to be an engineer.

I've always thought it would be fun to jump onto one of the unmanned helpers on a distributed power coal train, the ones around here always have a radio controlled helper on the rear end. Just sit in the cab and watch the scenery roll by. I'll never try it though.

Here's a useful link:

American Ass'n. Private Rail Car Owners
It's the landside equivalent of a yacht, a steel lined hole in the ground into which you pour money!
I had thought of a caboose specially equipped to run in a passenger train, there were a few made for Fast Mail trains, but they disappeared faster than freight train cabooses. Amtrak got a few cabooses for Maintenance of Way work trains, I don't know how they are set up, probably to run with freight trains.
My railroad (Tyburn) did buy ConRail bay window caboose 24519 and fixed it up as a private car, although still equipped to run in freight service. Later we sold it to the New Hampshire North Coast RR in October, 1998

The rule about hopping trains is that you don't do it alone. You always have an expirenced person show you. The technique is pretty simple, just run up and pull your self onto a train as it rounds a curve in a train yard, but you never want to do it alone or with another first-timer.

Oh, and it's a bad idea to hop in a boxcar, since the doors can shut and trap you in.

I'd suggest dressing really, really warmly, bringing a sleeping bag, and hopping an intermodal.
