There was the train thread, which had general train advice, like how to jump on / off, but I don't think it covered this specifically.

I hope this thread takes off, I'd love to hear some stories. Personally, I only have a few "someday" fantasies.

Like the rumble of a far off freight train drawing ever closer, I hear a safety debate approaching.

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.

"Me? I'd rather climb through a hole in the chain-link fence that surrounds the Oakland freight yard, hide in the shadows for six hours, jump onto a solid-bottom double stack when nobody's looking and lumber out of town for limitless practice in self-reliance and inspiration."

And it describes catching one! excellent!

I found the trains thread for you: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=30504

Anyone know how to change links so they look like a regular hyperlink?

You asked for advice. The above post shows a link that gives the proper method. Don't hop a moving train if you value life, and limb. No joke.

Too frigging dangerous. I don't particularly want to die face down in the roadbed bleeding out from the stumps of my legs.

I think it was there, someone has posted it. Even the proper way isn't that safe, and only good at low speed. You still have to get off, which can be much harder than getting on!

Wouldn't advise it. If it's going more than about 10mph your going for a ride, or playing with pain. I did it once. Train was going about 25mph when I dove off face first onto the snow covered ballast rock, or so I hoped. Not even a scratch. Lots can go wrong. It's not what you think.

I would imagine it's like anything else UE related: If you know what you're doing it could be fun very cool, but if not you're pretty much screwed. The difference is that this involves the friggin huge mass of a train, and is therefore a lot more dangerous. Seriously, I've done a lot of risky things, but I don't think I would do this without training like heck for it. If you're set on doing it, I would suggest training like a Tracuer does. Train in how to land and roll till your roll is extremely smooth and fluid, train yourself to be able, physically and mentally, to jump onto a huge moving object and grab onto something, and train your mind to assess potential situations quickly by running over potential hazards in your head over and over again. Really, it's just a matter of knowing your risk and being prepared for them. Sounds very cool if you do that. Let us know.

Jumping on or off a moving train is a real bad idea that can easily earn you a darwin award. If you're going to hop trains, the safest way is to get on a stationary train and ride it until it stops. Figure out the usual patterns for train movements in your area. Get a scanner, a guide to railway comms frequencies, and an employee time table. Once you're sure you know which train goes where and when, plan to catch a stopped train that'll stop somewhere where you can get back home by bus. This may well be in another town so plan accordingly with enough food, water, and money for a Greyhound ticket.

If you live in a large city with multiple rail yards (e.g. Toronto), there will be one or more local routes that shuttle cars between the yards. This would obviously be an easy target to ride.

Yea I got a story, I had been wanting to hop a train for a long time and A friend was wanting to tag along so I started planing. Every day this train would stop just outside of town before they crossed the river and the engineer and conductor would walk over to this store and get a soda and a snack. The train would then leave and go about 40 miles and stop to pick up some cars from this charcoal factory. This went on like clockwork. Well the day came and I had my backpack with some snacks in it and my phone so i could call No Name to pick us up later. Well the train didn't stop like normal and we ended up finally getting off the train about 130 miles away in another state. Fun times.

It was in September, we saw their silhouettes fade away, outlined on the horizon against the rays of the setting sun.

As long as you retrieve your limbs and mop up the blood so as to leave 'nothing but footprints' at the site/railroad track, you're golden! You're right though, rainman! Blood and a mess sure would mess up a site for future explorations, and no one appreciates that sort of thing!

I got a story too...
Got bored one night, so packed my bag and took the TTC to some random railyard. Spent the night under some bush close to where the trains exit the yard. I saw about five trains leave, but every time one was approaching, I'd hear one or two people a few meters away from where i was sleeping, talking on their walkie-talkies! I thought they were bulls and almost shit my pants...
Spent the better part of the next day reading Camus and eating strawberries... I made myself a bum shelter because it looked as though it was going to rain and no trains were coming or going, but at about 2pm this OK looking freighter came out and STOPPED!! I saw a couple of open boxcars too, so I grabbed my stuff and jumped on. Only seconds after, it started raining buckets and buckets. I couldn't believe how lucky I was that the ride came up just in time!
After it stopped raining, we were on the move! The scenery was at times amazing, and it was fun to see the stupified faces of the drivers when they saw a kid sitting cross-leged in a boxcar while waiting for the train to pass...
I rode for about 8 hours. Woke up in my comfy sleeping bag at night, in some creepy railyard. My train stopped and starting going the other way, and I jumped off since I thought it was getting humped. I walked around the surrounding town for about ten minutes without seeing a soul. Then this lady came about, walking her dog.
- Excuse me, do you know what town is this? (by the way by this point I look like a real dirtbag)
- Sorry, I really don't know... I forgot my watch.
- What town is this?
- Oh, well this is North Bay.

...
The rest of the story's boring. I was tired and sleepy and lonely, and after asking a pretty Mach's cashier for directions, I got a 2am Greyhound back home.
...maybe next time I'll make it to Vancouver?!...

P.S. you check out my pics here --> http://www.flickr....72157594183425353/ if you want, and sorry for the long post...
