| | | lately for steam tunnels I've been hauling around: small digital camera maps bandana (worn as a do-rag to keep fiberglass out of hair) leatherman kneepads fingerless gloves butter knife for jimmying locks 1-watt LED flashlight 2AA maglite w/ LED conversion lighter cell phone caffeine pills sometimes if we're planning on going to a particularly dusty area I'll wear a dust mask and chemistry goggles. For particularly long treks I'll bring water as well. I'd also like to obtain a respirator, and possibly some form of helmet as I've been hitting my head on things a lot lately.

| | | These are lists of things I'd bring, by location. I'm not quite as obsessed (sorry!) with photography as some of you guys, so I'm not going to detail what camera it is. I'm also not going to go into detail about what peripherals I'm using, since I'm not.
For any location, I'd bring:
- A Flashlight (I prefer SureFire)
- Extra batteries
- A small LED flashlight (For backup)
- A small baton (Because I don't like to be vulnerable)
- A cellphone
- A digital camera (With flash, and preferably waterproof)
- Food and water (Unless you are in an unfriendly environment)
- A good story
- A lighter
- Roll of tape (Duct tape is best, but masking tape is OK, too)
For office buildings and fancier hotels:
- Briefcase (To contain equipment)
- Suit or other business clothes
- Detergent or bleach stick (To keep myself looking good)
- Notebook (Even better: Small binder)
For tourist hotels:
- T-shirt and shorts or jeans
- Backpack or small suitcase (For equipment, duh)
- Sunglasses
For abandoned sites:
- Respirator (Just in case)
- Bunnysuit (Disposable coveralls, often white)
- Climbing harness and rope (Optional)
- Backpack (Same reason as before)
- Rotary tool (I prefer Dremel (Optional, and in many cases an electric screwdriver can provide similar support))
- Warm gloves, inside latex or plastic gloves
- Heavy boots (Preferably with plastic or fiberglass toe shield and soles, and not steel, which gets cold)
For drains:
- Rubber boots
- Empty plastic bottle, paper, pen and plastic ties (to leave messages)
- Same gloves as for abandoned sites
- GPS receiver (Optional, but handy)
- An emergency air supply (Very optional, but if you need it, you'll be glad it's there)
- Goggles (Optional, but a good idea, to prevent water getting in your eyes since you never know where it's been)
Medical stuff:
- If you're diabetic, you may want to have some sugar packets or candy in your pocket
- If you have a life-threatening allergy, cary an epinephrine (adrenaline) auto-injector, or two (commonly an EpiPen, but I prefer a Twinject)
- If you have asthma, carry your reliever medications and, if you plan to be in the tunnels for a long time, your preventer medication.
