Just to let you know, posting on multiple boards is not necessary. Posting in the appropriate board for your topic should get you sufficient results. If that fails, you can always private message one of the explorers that have been exploring for some time (i.e. Avatar-X, Jester, Crossfire, etc.). And on a side note, I have posted a response in the "United States" board, and made a comment for the mods that it is better suited in this board.

Actually I think this is better suited to the Tutorials/Useful Info board. And I know there have been equipment threads in the past...

So there I was, in this creepy old hallway...

We're not on the "Tutorials, Lessons, and Useful Info" board? Damn. I get so disoriented sometimes because there are so many boards.

Is a backpack a bad choice of equipment? I don't think it could really get in the way in any situation unless of course it is going to absorb lots of water, or weigh you down (i.e when running). A maglight, roll of tape, 2 way radio, notebook and pen, and whatever else would easily fit in this.
I think carrying a Zippo would be a wise idea as well because if a fire needed to get started then it would work well, and stay dry if ya got wet. Kust make sure before each trip it's fluid level is full

Damnit! That's what I forgot! A Backpack!

Well, a packpack could weigh you down drastically, or it may not. It could sway either way. It all depends on the equipment you put in there. What you listed above shouldn't weigh you down. But what I can't understand is why you'd need a Zippo Lighter. If you're stuck somewhere in MO, can't just yell "Taxi!"? Or am I thinking of the wrong part of MO? Why'd you need a fire, anyways?

I always carry a backpack. It stores my extra layers, equipment, food and medical supplies. Doesn't get in the way, I suggest going to Mountain Equipment Co-op if you're in the Toronto area and picking up one of their hiking bags, they have lots of features and extra compartments, great for UE.

Well because I'm bored I'm gonna use up Av's bandwidth () and post (for at least the 4th time since I've joined these boards) my general equipment list:

1.3MP Digital Camera
2D Maglite
2AA Minimag
Extra Batteries
Cellphone
Kevlar Gloves
Respirator with P-100 Asbestos filters

That's my usual equipment loadout. Now keep in mind what I carry also depends on the location. Sometimes other specific things are needed, other times I'll go in with nothing but my Minimag and camera. It all depends, and you'll have to decide for yourself what is appropriate for the location at hand. I also don't generally carry a backpack. What usually happens, is say we go out in a crew of 3 or 4 people, one person will carry a bag full of everything too big/heavy/whatever, to fit in people's pockets.

Oh, and I also bring a Zippo, but that's because I smoke. I can't see it having any good use during UE, no reason to start a fire anywhere and if you need light use a flashlight.

So there I was, in this creepy old hallway...

A zippo is agreat choice, lights when wet, but you can also engrave with your favorite logos. Also stays lit without pushing a button. Last year in November our power went out and I showered in the AM by "zippolight".

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

2 way radios that work underground
.

What radios are those ? I'm not really aware of radios that penetrate through cavern walls...

I dunno about through cavern walls, but they work in most of the tunnels we explore. The again we are never THAT far away from eachother. We use the cobra's I cant rember what model, they are in my friends truck right now. We allso use some cheap lil radois that my friend got at a gun show for $20 for the set, they actaualy work really good

Ok, Cobra's I know. Those are typical FRS. No FRS radio will work through too thick a barrier of stone/concrete. You would have to be pretty close together for them to work in most types of tunnels. Line of sight is fine, but around corners etc you'll normally have problems... unless the walls are pretty thin.

Depends upon the thickness and type of material between the radios. The radio waves will only travel so far through different materials.

Also, bring Mentos. They keep you fresh, help you stay cool and they’ll get you out of any situation. All you have to do when security is chasing you down is pop one in your mouth, smile and show it to them. They are bound by the unspoken law that they cannot bust you for anything as long as you have your Mentos. Plus, they don’t make so much noise like other mints that come in tin boxes and will remain nameless.

As a rule of thumb I always bring a backpack, maglite, digital camera, cellphone, a multi-tool, and an emergency flashlight and glowstick. If your gonna have to run with a backpack, ive found it easier to just have it slung over one shoulder, having it on both shoulders slows me down some. Anybody use messenger bags? me and my friend were exploring the old auditorium today and it seemed to work for him. I guess it all depends on the situation, if im going on a roof i take whatever i need out of my backpack and leave it at the bottom. Also a headlamp, walkie talkies(with headphones), and extra clothes come in handy.
