|  | | | Yes, I know, another flashlight thread, but I was just wondering if anyone's had any experience with this particular spotlight. The specs look decent, but I'd be interested in hearing how well it actually performs.

1 watt is meaningless without some sort of reference. It's light should be rated in lumens. Why hide the specs unless there not good? It least if they state it, you can then claim false advertising.
1 footcandle = 1 lumen per square foot
1 footcandle = 10.76 lumen / sq-m
1 footcandle = 10.76 lux
1 lumen = 1/683 watts @ 555nm
1 Lux = 1 lumen / sq-m
1 watt second = 1 joule = 107 ergs

I'm just assuming it's a luxeon I. Running on 4AA I would guess about two hours of good runtime (again assuming it's not regulated).

I suppose you could check lumiled's datasheets for typical lumen output, although you'd need to know which bin this light is using.
BTW micro, that's one awkward thing to take ueing in Toronto unless you're going draining.

There's no way to tell because a poorly designed reflector, or lens could reduce the output. A responsible manufacturer will post his specs, and even educate the consumer on how to understand them. I don't like to guess with my money; I've played the "how bright is it" game before.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'd be using it for. I already have a couple of halogen ones but get I'm starting to get a bit tired of the yellow light they give off.

"one watt" LED is nowhere close to bright for a light that size. If it's going to be cumbersome shaped like that one, it better be REALLY bright.
Expect it to be about as bright as a Mag 2D. Also, there's no way you'll get one watt out of 4AAs for tens of hours. The claimed life is tens of hours, because it dims significantly as the battery wears down.
Get a Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon LED. It is around 2W (Luxeon I over driven) and batteries last around 2-3 hours, 4-5 hours with rechargeables. This is one of the brightest 4AA lights you can get with a beam that projects quite far.

Seconded. It's the best general purpose light on the market right now.
Other good lights for UE include the Inova X1, X5 and T2, Peak Atlantic, Mediterranean and McKinley, the Surefire L2, and the Night-Ops Gladius. While all of these lights will do various things that the SL 4AA Lux won't, they all use exotic batteries, cost a fortune, or both.
