Tunnels in the Southside hills in Newfoundland

I'm not sure if any of you are from Newfoundland or have knowledge of the area.. but hopefully i'll be lucky enough to find someone know knows what i'm talking about!
In the vacinity of the southside hills, after you drive past the huge Irving sign there is a dockyard on the opposite side of the road. Across from this dockyard are three or four doors into the hill probally spaced 20m apart, and the one furthest to the right is open enough to squeeze a small person in (the other two are locked or barred up). The tunnel is very large, and once in there its probally a 200m walk to the end of it. It just keeps going in one direction and then opens up into a large 'room' with what looks like a huge cement platform.
Does anyone have any idea what these tunnels are/were used for?

Sounds like the remains of the US base Argentia.

Quite possibly leftovers from the war, but i'm getting the feeling it's not. The tunnels look like something for artillery, they are ridiculously large and perfectly blasted out..i'll try to get some pictures.

Thanks for the replies!

I've UE'd the place a few years ago and I heard more and more is being demolished now. Of course, the tunnels, bunkers and all the rest are still there and will stay there for a long time. Some of these contains PCBs and other toxic wastes left behind by the yanks (so nice of them...).

I just googled it : http://www.google....cial&start=10&sa=N

Or here for a few pics since it's been abandoned :http://www.geocit...rgentia/index.html

Ah. Well I've been there then. Old bunkers. Not used anymore as far as I know. There's some on Signal Hill and on the other hill facing it.

During WW2 St Johns NL was a base for Convoy Escort ships and a Hunter/Killer group to seek out U-Boats before they picked up the convoys. The Southside bunkers were built for storage of HE shells, basic ammo, Depth Charges and the later forms of Anti-sub explosive such as "Hedgehog" etc, so that the ships could be re-armed and back to sea as fast as possible. The bunkers are still barely 150' from the docked ships. The massive mountain of rock gave excellent protection from potential air attack and attack by sea would require actually entering the harbour to get the bunker doors directly.
Lots of history there fellas...

Yep. Sounds like Argentia.

Argentia is actually over an hours drive from St. John's, where the Southside Hills are. Argentia doesn't have as much to explore as it used to since alot of the buildings have been demolished. It's still worth the drive though. I was down there this summer for the first time in a few years. I noticed that some of the entrances to the tunnels on the south side of the base have fences around them (which aren't even locked). More and more of the former military buildings are being used by businesses.
