| | | I no longer will visit the Camsell. It has passed it's glory days as an abandon and is now well on it's way to become condos. There are hundreds of photos of it on the UEA site. My first trip to it, it still had power and functional equipment in the operating rooms. Last itme I went there it was mostly an empty shell. Drainsofmycity.com hosts the edmonton meets.

| | | I did an early morning recon mission to the Campsall and found a bobcat ripping out shrubbery and some dudes chucking junk out the windows. The place looks pretty much the same as always minus the one building and with more broken windows and trash everywhere. And more 'Native Pride' graf-but all of this is old hat to longtime Edmontonions I'm sure. I have to say Booogeyman that my quick scout of downtown yielded lots of possibilities and I'd encourage you just to take a bike ride. There's lots of yummy looking stuff that's yours for the taking!

We all love Dogboy, and he has an exemption. Life is unfair and we do our best to support others. His uniqueness should not limit him from particiapting. However some are capable and unwilling. For that there is little patience. [last edit 6/25/2006 5:48 AM by Skaught - edited 1 times]

| | | The Charles Camsell has currently been having work done on it to build it into condo's but yesterday (Nov 17) it had a major fire that took hours to extinguish. however due to the vacancy of the building, it was only $5000.00 damage. Sat, November 18, 2006 Camsell burns Vacant hospital building By ELIZA BARLOW, EDMONTON SUN A firefighter climbs a ladder towards the vacant Charles Camsell hospital yesterday. A fire at a vacant Inglewood hospital, notorious until recently as a "magnet" for drug dealers, prostitutes and gangs, was finally extinguished around 7 p.m. yesterday after catching fire in the morning. A construction crew working at the old Charles Camsell hospital, 12815 115 Ave., reported a fire in the building at 8:57 a.m., said fire spokesman Nikki Booth. Firefighters found a blaze near the top of the building but quickly discovered it was too dangerous for crews to be inside, said Booth. DANGEROUS SITE "We encountered barbed wire on the stairwells and on the walls, holes in the floors, boarded-up rooms. So we removed our crews and set up aerial ladders with a hose." A crew was later sent up the back stairs to get closer to the blaze, said Booth. She said the fire was confined to the top portion of the building. By late afternoon, it was under control. Investigators later said a renovation crew had been cutting through a metal beam and the fire started when a spark ignited some insulation around a pipe. The Charles Camsell was closed in 1996 and has remained virtually vacant ever since. In the meantime, it has served as a set for a few television shows and movies, including the feature film Whitecoats produced by Edmonton's Minds Eye Productions. Controversy swirled around the Camsell in 1998, when Yellowknife North MLA Roy Erasmus said he'd been told some women were involuntarily sterilized at the hospital during the 1960s and 1970s. Inglewood Community League president Paul Adams said the hospital and site were owned by the city until developer Gene Dub bought it a few years ago. Dub plans to use the building for a condo development of about 560 units, said Adams. Dub couldn't be reached for comment yesterday. Construction workers were reportedly at the building exposing asbestos, which would then be sealed or removed. Booth said Alberta Environment was called to the scene but didn't find harmful levels of asbestos in the air. About 130 students from nearby Inglewood school were evacuated as a precaution, she said. Adams said the city kept 24-hour security at the site, but once the building was sold, tabs were only kept sporadically and the building soon went "out of control." UNDESIRABLES "It became a magnet for all sorts of undesirables. The parking lot would be used for all sorts of nefarious activities - prostitution, drug addicts, gangs living in the building. "The place was active 24-7. It's still a problem now, but not nearly as severe." Adams said the placing of a fence around the grounds has helped. He said the community league is in favour of the old hospital site being developed as housing for seniors, families or perhaps assisted living.
