| | | Has anyone been to Elkmont at Great Smoky Mountain National Park? Elkmont is a campground and ranger station located in Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountain National Park in between Gatlinburg and Townsend along the Laurel Creek Road. Prior the park’s creation in the 1930s, Elkmont was a logging camp and summer vacation community to Knoxville’s elite. Elkmont once boasted over seventy buildings including a train station, the Wonderland Hotel and two hunting lodges. Unlike the local farmers who were forced to sell their land and homes and move, the Elkmont community was allowed to maintain life-long leases on their summer cottages. In the 1980s the cottages and remaining buildings became listed on the U.S. Register of Historic Places. The cottages were privately maintained until all leases were terminated in 1992 with the intention of removing all buildings and returning the area to a natural state. A lively debate ensued between the environmentalists who sought removal and return to nature and preservationists who fought to keep the buildings. This year the Park presented its final plan to remove all but 18 of the buildings. Today there are 74 buildings remaining in various states of decay. While some are beyond repair, most are in good shape. The bottom line is most will be gone by the end of next year.
