hostility among the homeless

Do you guys ever have a lot of problems with dealing with the homeless? We've had a few times where we knew there were people in there with us, they would make noises like clapping or banging stuff and one time it got to the point that we were in an old hotel and realized we were in a homeless colony with someone home and they also kept making noises behind a closed door but we stayed cause we werent trying to bother them or anything and they opened the door a little and slammed it so hard on us.
any suggestions on how to deal with run ins with the homeless?

always respect those that consider the abandonment to be their home. as an explorer, you have no more legal right to be in a building than a resident. if they have their belongings and are settled into the place, consider that they were there first and don't plan on leaving unless authorities that be force them out. you are just passing through. most of the time residents won't start a fuss as long as you don't disturb their territory. but if they show aggression, you might as well leave and come back some other time. the last thing you want to do is get into a fight in a place you may not know, with someone who may have no regard for your harmless intentions, your safety, or even their own safety. especially if the individual may be under the influence or armed.
i was in an abandoned parking garage this morning and had to carefully tread my way through to avoid waking residents. i waited near the top of the garage for a couple that were leaving, well out of their space. they were very nice to me on the way out and even interested in the fact that i was a photographer. though, i never photograph residents, unless they specifically ask me. to me it seems a serious faux pas.

Don't forget you have just as much right (or just as little right) to be there as they do.

all agreed, i love talking to them ... i get insight from them and sometimes they'll point me into places i wouldnt have found without their knowledge. also, giving them a five dollar bill goes along way too sometimes.

this guy wanted me to take his pic, made him feel special that day.

cheers !

so far i haven't ever been in a place where someone was home, although while exploring with a group once a homeless guy was watching us climb into a building and handing all our equipment in and he asked if we were shooting a movie. we said 'no, just pictures' and he thought it was cool and then went back to folding his shopping cart full of clothes.

i guess as long as you're not being a delinquent most people shouldn't have a problem with us being there as long as everyone respects personal space.

I've never had a problem with the homeless... in fact most of them have been polite. If you just talk with them a bit, you can learn from them.
Just like others have said.......

yeah thanks for the insight. the only thing i get is alot of the places that are abandoned where i live are on this one street which is a pretty bad stretch of town... lots of bars where you can snort coke off the table etc.. and alot of the vagrants usually seem more hostile than helpful. for the most part though if we think there is someone in there we try to just stay out of their way unless
(like the other day) we could definately tell we weren't wanted and would rather stay out of harms way rather than get some awesome shots. oh well...

That's awesome! I love the homeless, especially the real gritty ones. Amazingly, most choose to live that way. They always have a story to tell and are generally good folks. I've been homeless myself, fortunate enough not to have to live in the street, but had to live in a shitty motel full of crack-heads for a couple of months a number of years ago. Some of the nicest, most generous people I've ever known. Unfortunately there are also many mentally ill people on the streets and you do have to be a bit careful. Most are harmless but you can never be sure. If you keep your wits about you and explore with a partner, take advantage of their knowledge of the area.

like everybody else said, ive never really had any problems with them being aggressive. they usually come and ask for change and make usual BS conversation and then we all go our separate ways. they can be a great source of knowledge of abandon buildings in that neighborhood.

Screw em! Face full of pepper spray, followed by a serious Taser blast to the nuts, and capped with a plumbing pipe beatdown! Hell yeah!

Um....er......I mean, when I'm not just casually chatting with them trying to get info on an area.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

There are actually homeless people by choice who live, play, and/or work amongst us, and unless they allow us into their inmost confidence, we would never realize it. Granted, they are pretty uncommon, but they're there, and for all you know they could be your boss.

Although not specifically related to UE-homeless-encounters, I do suggest you bring a pack of cigarettes with you - it makes a nice gesture to offer a guy a cigarette without demeaning his selfworth, it makes a viable loss if they're the type that'll pull a kitchen knife and rob you, it makes a great bribe if you'd like to ask a favour of them. (UE-wise, maybe if you want to ask if they'd mind if you go upstairs to get some more photos of the upper floor, or something)
