exploring strorm drains

I was wondering if anyone had some ideas on exploring runoff street drains. I've traveled for a couple miles in some and my main question is if anyone has found any efficient ways to travel in pipes 3 feet or less in diameter. Recently I have just been using knee and elbow pads, but I'm sure there's a quicker way to get around, like using a skateboard or some special crawling technique etc... I'd appreciate any ideas, thanks.
