Anyone know the name of the book that has all the designations numbers for chemicals? The numbers would be on semis and the such to show what they are carrying along with barrels and the sort.. I think theres a standard for it, I can't remember for the life of me what it's called though but could be useful at times..

Go to your DMV & tell them you want the HAZMAT test books. They'll give you a copy to 'study' That's how I got mine when I took my CDL tests...

Most of the hazmat numbers used in the freight industry are standardized by the UN. The basic numbers are the same worldwide but a superset of IDs are used in North America. The US DOT has a very long PDF on hazmat first response which includes a list of UN/NA ID numbers:

http://hazmat.dot....n/2000/erg2000.pdf

CAS numbers are used to identify chemicals outside of a transport context but there's no free index of CAS numbers available.

In Canada you can get M.S.D.S.'s, Material Safety Data Sheets. They give all necessary information about anything you might come across.

My highschool chemistry teacher had two of these books. If I remember correctly they actually contained quite a bit more info than that .pdf you linked. Each page number corresponded to a placard number/chemical and then it went on to explain where the chemical was used, it's environmental hazards, and mostly how to handle the spill. The book was about the size of a big city telephone book and had well over 2000 pages. It was definitely designed as a reference for first responders. She said she got them from one of her past students who was on the volunteer fire dept.

It would definitely be more in depth than the pdf ( which is 374 pages long and is designed for truckers/railroaders/etc to carry with them at work) Here is an alternate link to the same document, Canadian source just in case Depatrment of Hysterics and Scares ever shuts down the US gov't link.

Kick ass, that'd be the book David, the PDF that was linked looks like the same book.. How often do they update that thing? I found the 2000 book and the 2004..
Sadly I 'think' that by law they don't have to post it's DOT number thingy on anything, and last I looked into that book I read somewhere that it really wasn't fully standardised.. Although I may have gotten bad information about that so I am not sure, I wouldn't doubt anyone that drives fuel trucks or some other HAZMAT rated semi would be able to set me straight..
But I think with the amount of random crap we could run across in some old buildings a book like this could be VERY useful, wether the outcome of knowing what the contents of a barrel is you ignore it or call it in because it's something REALLY bad..

Also they sell'em on Amazon used for like $4 if you wanted to save a few bucks

Changes would be saved up until it became absolutely neccessary to issue a new version. Regardless of whether it is a complete rewrite or a change of one sentence, as soon as a new edition is issued, the old one becomes void and can no longer be used officially. Therefore, a new hardcopy has to be made available to every transport worker in Canada AND the USA.
