That was where I took my father when he came out from Ontario. He's legally blind, but a military history nut, so he just took off muttering "Ooh... a thingamajig.." or "Hrm... this would have been where blabbityblah took place, hey I wonder what's behind this door?"

Watching him in there convinced me exploration is in the blood.

Just one more shot from Vulcan, of my favourite part of the site:

That tool board is outstanding... I have most of the tools that would go there.. They're all vintage Ford wares..... Which is the majority of the things on the board.. Today's worthless trivia!

Nice photo Tour..

Well, I grew up on such a base and basically spent my first 14 years playing in hangars like these. I dunno what I could tell you precisely...

Those hangers were used for aircrafts maintenance, usually civilian aircrafts because the doors were not as high as the military ones. This is a double hangar, prolly used mostly for Cessnas, Navajos, Kingairs and perhaps small jets like learjets and such.

Those hangars were usually abandonned in the 80's because the modern designs of aircrafts then made the tails of the planes higher and this was a problem for that type of doors. A way to work around that was to add weight to the tail to lower it in order to have it get inside the doors. Some people modified the structure of those hangars to install higher doors, which would have solved the high tails problem but would sometime create structural problems in the long term.

The little corner office upstair is usually the supervisor's office. And usually, right close to it there would be the welding station. Cement was used as flooring so chemical could be sprayed on planes to remove the paint without any risk of being absorbed by the ciment. Ciment and strong, commercial plane paint removal = very slippery and very toxic. I fell in a number of time when I was a kid and was rushed to the shower faster than than lightning.

Do you have any other question I'm missing?

Just a little interjection maze
being as the vulcan aerodrome was originally built during WW|| for the BCATP, the largest possible plane it would have house, and a very improbable, but possible, was an Lancaster, the Harvards, Texans, Chipmunks, and other light aero-trainers would have had none at all problems re tail height.

that is unless im out to lunch on my manufacture dates on Cessna 150,152,172,182 and beyond series, along with the kingairs, and the lear's

the hanger is identical to hangar 14, and hangar 11 at CYXD, as well as many many many other BCATP hangers across Canada.

But hey, i was only an aircadet for 7 yrs, and only work presently at a former BCATP aerodrome, also the oldest field in the Dominion.

Yeah, I'm with you Marshall. I remember the Cessnas/kingairs and others simply cause they were the one I flew & saw around in the 80's. But also true about Lancaster, Harvard and Beavers too (well, on the East Coast anyway, I'm not sure there were many Beavers out west?).

The aerodrome was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, built in 1941 and opened in 1942. During wartime training it housed an average of 1300 personnel, and at one point as many as 2500 were stationed there.

Training aircraft at BCATP facilities would have included some or all of the traditional BCATP roster:

* Airspeed Oxford
* Avro Anson
* Boeing Stearman
* Bristol Bolingbroke
* Cessna Crane
* De Havilland Tiger Moth
* Fairchild Cornell
* Fairey Battle
* Fairey Swordfish
* Fleet Finch
* Noorduyn Norseman
* North American Harvard
* North American Yale
* Stinson 105
* Westland Lysander

The Vulcan site was predominantly used to train on the Avro Anson.

wow lots of interest and knowledgeable people. there is one plane everyone has missed. there were vulcans at vulcan. i read about a restored vulcan bomber which originated from vulcan. the wings over alberta web site has some good info. tim johnstons page talks about his first visit to pearce aerodrome after it was abandoned. nothing like finding 20 lancasters, wow. naturally they are all gone now.
anyone know anything about the semi abandoned airfield on the south side of 22x approx. 15 mins east of the city (calgary). lots of old planes sitting there in disrepair.
agentnox your story about your father reminds me of a time with my grandfather. we were on the HMS belfast which he served on during the war he had a story for every part of the ship. it is permanently docked as a tourist attraction on the river thames in jolly old england. i grew up there and started ue early pissing around in old ww2 bunkers on the beach.

I'd love to explore a military site with somebody who served during WWII. I worked briefly as a military archivist and historian, and it fuelled an abiding interest in the field.

I'd love to see the Lancasters, I was lucky enough to fly in one of the 2 remaining airworthy Lancs. Loud. So loud. But what a fun time.

Are you talking about the private airfield on the outskirts of Indus? It is an active small plane airstrip. Definitiely NOT BCATP. There was one on the south side of the river in Dewinton but When I scouted it there was nothing left. It is shown on some older topo maps.

I was just talking with one of the aeronautical geeks at work today and he told me that they've been doing engine tests on the Lancaster that's in Nanton. It sounds like they might be trying to get it airworthy again. That would be uber cool.

My ex-girlfriend's grandfather was a flight instructor and a test pilot at one of the bases in Alberta. All sorts of great stories from him.
