in infiltrations, i pull the 'stupid female' and it works every time: "oh, i just wanted to see how high the stairs went!" etc. *twist hair, bat eyelashes*. it's a pretty effective form of social engineering - even when i'm with a group of guys it always works. i've never been spotted in an abandoned building, but i've always got an excuse on hand - hopefully i'll never have to try them.

Yeah. The "dumb girl" coupled with some knowledge of the site, a camera, and a good "I didn't know..." works well.

"I'm not supposed to be here? But it's soooooo pretty! Can I take a couple more pictures, please?" *bat lashes and smile coyly*

Works for me! You've expressed a sincere interest in the site your trespassing on, but politely ignorant in addressing yourself to that fact. I love it! Give this lady an A+ in passive infiltration.

Due to our society I find it's best to travel with a female counterpart, lots of times this has helped get information and access to area's. At worst case scenario she can also turn on the water works which always works, if your male this might work too especially if your a big tattoo'd pierced guy, you'll totally freak them out. Also being a photographer I'm usually heavily laiden with equipment so I guess they figure I won't try to out run them if I have too (there mistake). But ultimately limited truth works best (questions with questions)

I want to die while asleep like my grandfather,
not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.

I find that when they come up to you asking what you're doing there, scream "OH MY GOD SOMEBODY PUT SHIT IN MY PANTS!!!!" and run away flailing you arms in the air and screaming "WHY GOD WHY??", they rarely follow

I hate all of you

while the "shit in pants" probably keeps people from following you...

You might consider chatting up the person you encounter with the history of the place. As we tend to have a great deal of back story on places, this can be very effective.
" ..Hey you! What are you doing there?"
"do you realize [Insert interesting but not "ghost hunting" related history here]"

Of course when I tried it, the person knew more than I did about the site and were still not pleased to see me =P

The truth is usually good.

"I like the way the building looks, I thought I'd come in and take a few pictures"

Followed up by either offering to show them some of the pictures, or asking them if I should leave or if I could continue.

I usually just use the war van to go exploring with. I've yet to be questioned in the NY, NJ PA areas that I have been.

First off.. Where the hell did you steal that there van?

Secondly, wimmin...

Thirdly, how does this sound:

"Can I help you?/What are you doing?/Who are you?"

"Ah, hello. I'm Insert A. Namehere. I'm on an (urban) mapping project and I've been assigned to this area. Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about the building?"

No misrepresentation, glosses the facts in a fine bull-coloured shine, brings you off as a possibly well-educated and harmless guy, and finally puts the ball in their court. Writing something down in a notepad wouldn't hurt either.

As an alternative, I'm fourteen. How plausible is a school project, especially if I bring cred props such as duotang, camera and air of nerdish surprise?
