| | Is there a "practical" use for UE skills < on 5/16/2006 7:33 AM >
| | | For me, the reason to explore whatever I can find is simply to enjoy seeing things most people never will. However, is there a "practical" use for the skills used in UE? By that I mean, something that could get you a job or accomplish something that the general population would see as desireable. Not that it's really important, I am just curious what your opinions are. [last edit 5/16/2006 7:33 AM by Chronos - edited 1 times]

| | | and then there is the job of buying a dilapidated old house, renovating and selling it at an increased price. UE skills could be useful in determining what state the place is in, so it could help to determine if you should buy the place or not. UE skill (hiding from security) could be used for private investigation, police officer, security officer... granted i am making assumptions.

| | | Yeah, problem solving skills. Half the places the SBC goes need inventive ways in or around. There have been a number of times we had to build equipment just for a certain place. Skills like that don't just come in handy in my line of work, they're required.

Well it differs depending on what firm you are working for. But where I work they saw how good I am at climbing, and promoted me after a month. The benefits are great too. They have their own in house doctor/dentist/massage therapist and its all free. You can also get a company vehicle. And of course, if anyone screws with you, they got your back.

| | | If I recall, there is a drainer on this board whose (is that the right spelling?) job involves running around in drains. I've found that climbing around on truss in my regular work has been useful for climbing in UE situations, but I think you were looking for examples in the other direction. - Kel

| | | If you have the right career, UE can be a job skill. I have been paid to do infiltration of live commercial target locations in the past to determine if security guards and systems are working as intended. So yes, very practical, for me! I have also helped a friend that's in the legal business check out an off-limits location to validate the layout and help with a case.

| | | Phreaking was what got me interested in UE in the first place. That came in handy the first time I had to work with some phone equipment at work... Boss: Okay, here, let me train you on this... Me: *snip* *clip* *strip* *tone* *ani* *punchpunchpunch* *test* "It's OK now." Boss: Uhhh... where did you learn that? I didn't see anything about this on your resumé... and where did you get all those tools with "Bell" marked on them? Me: Hey, how about I go do a coffee run...
