Using the homeless network

The idea came to me after being approached by a homeless person for money the other day.

Do any of you use the homeless as a resource?

As a group, they must have a wealth of information about their areas, and probably a lot that only they know about. Information on local sites such as entrances/exits, security, physical hazards, and usage of the site (other homeless living there, if the drug trade uses it, etc).

I was thinking of trying to establish contact with the homeless underground with a mutual exchange system (food, cigs, etc in exchange for information). Chances are if someone you ask doesn't know the answers to your questions, they will know someone in the network that does and can get the information for you.

Thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea, but, idk, so far, i've only heard good things about homeless, how they're decent people and all. But still, they cant all be good, so I'd be careful if I were you, if you give em too much they'll get greedy.

When I ask them questions about places... They usually want a dollar. Then another dollar!

Kubla Khan seems to deal with the homeless quite a bit. You might want to get in touch with him and get his ideas.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

I'm divided.

One of the people I go with locally mentioned it, but there's kind of a pro and con for it.

The pro, they might tell you some info, and if its a place they routinely stay...you'll be visiting as a guest and not invading their living space suddenly, which some people might see as a show of respect.

The con, asking for the info could to some people be seen as an intrusion into where they live, if they reside there. Also, some of the people on the streets do need some serious help, and may be unpredictable and/or hostile.

Really tricky territory when you get to that point, in my opinion. It might work, it might not, so use your own discretion.

I don't do what I do in this life for prestige or accolades. I do it because i'm alive.

I have "used the homeless network" to my advantage a few times, actually. Generally (around here, anyway) they are fairly friendly, and will gladly share stories and information in exchange for a few dollars or just some company for a few minutes.

I haven't run into anyone yet who seemed insulted or intruded-upon; quite the contrary, really. Most of them are curious to hear what I'm doing, and seem genuinely interested in my quest. A few have even happily posed for pictures ;)

I guess it's just an issue of using one's best judgement...

When i think about it, does the location of the hobos affect their personality? (I.E. Are inner-city hobos any nicer/worse than suburban hobos?)

A few I have met along the way were very educated and just trying to crawl back out of the hole they landed in. Way to proud to take hand outs. I've had some great conversation and I was shown some really cool places. I stopped back to see one of them one day with a cooler of scotch, ice and some glasses and I gave him my email address. He would stop at the library and mail me every once in awhile. About 2 years after we met I got an email from a corporate address with a picture of him, his new wife and baby. I have also met a few that I would not ever want to talk to again in life. Just have to be cautious of everyone you meet I guess.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

It's disturbing to think most of the homeless in my area were mental patients turned loose when a sanitorium closed.

You sure of your facts? I hardly doubt they'd release the mentally unstable into the public just 'cause the asylum closed. They probably got transferred.

Yeah, I'm sure. They released who they believed to be "stable patients" who could fend for themselves. The violent ones were transferred. Alot of the homeless you talk to downtown often say they spent time in the "looney bin". You can tell which ones are insane, they often mutter or argue with themselves, sometimes violently.

Scary shit.

Hey that's me on a regular basis....

I've used the HoboHoJo as a great place to get intel.
Around here the hobos are generally just drunks.. bring a couple quarts of Natural Ice & you got a friend as long as the beer don't run out.
But yes some are a loose cannon. Like the dude who has colored plastic bags tied into the holes on his shopping cart and sits on a bench holding a big(like 5ft tall) teddy bear. He seems happy as a clam, but you know there's something goin on.

I once had a random guy off the street talk to me about the boots I was wearing. His name was Randolf. He was cool.
