| | | I would like to get to know the sub $300 cameras you guys use as the primary exploration camera. I know there's been many camera threads, but often time the posts discuss cameras that are way too expensive for many people. I will post about mine and I would much appreciate if you could post about yours in a similar format in addition to your comment. Type: Panasonic DMC-LZ2, semi-compact body http://www.dprevie...nasonic_dmclz2.asp ^review sensor: 5MP Lens: 6x optical, image stabilizer memory: SD card battery: 2 x AA, regular or rechargeable Like: 6x zoom and image stabilization Dislike: this thing becomes pretty big when the lens extends, therefore, can't go in the pocket while it is turned on, grainy pictures. Lack of manual focus, poor auto-white balance indoors.

| | | My only camera is a Canon Powershot A50. I bought it used on EBay for $300 about 4-5 years ago; I think it goes for like $30 now. Considering that, its pretty decent and I've taken some great pictures on it, but it has little manual control and just isn't very good by today's standards. I've used a few other Powershot cameras that go for well under $300 that I don't own, and plan to buy one eventually, they seem like great value. If you want to compare features on new or old cameras, I strongly recommend www.dpreview.com They even have sample photos a lot of the time... but you basically have to ignore the price listings, I don't think they are updated.

| | | Nikon CoolPix 995 Swivel-type body http://www.dprevie...on/nikon_cp995.asp 3.3MP 4x optical zoom, no stabilization CF Card Takes EL1(i think) rechargeable batteries AND some other typical camera battery you can get anywhere.
Like: It'll do ISO 800, up to a minute long exposures, easy to add new optics, the swiveling body, white balance bracketing, nice images, I really love this camera. Dislike: Only 3.3MP, it has some issues with a few brands of CF cards, a tad bulky, and it's a little slow to power on/zoom.

I hear you. My night shots need a gyroscopic stabilizers to not come out looking like the result of a parkinson's diseased photographer...

Do you even know what that mount does? Doesn't sound like it. Also, your disease reference is exceedingly rude. I know many handicapped photographers (mentally and physically) that put out better shitty shots than the best of your best. You post pisses me off. Glass

I'm with glass, I have a cousin once removed who has parkinsons. Back on topic. My camera cost me $250 and does an awesome job, I just have to manually set the ISO to 50 anything greater gets a lot of noise, especially at night. So basically - go with a low iso - manual focus if possible - use a tripod, any tripod will do - run the camera in manual also for night. [last edit 5/7/2006 9:44 PM by Axle - edited 1 times]

| | | I used to have a Fuji Finepix S5100. 4 MP 10X Optical Zoom XD Card
It worked great during the day, but at night it was not so good. Lot's of noise trying to take night shots with it.

Personally I'd never again buy a Fuji digital camera. In my experience they've all got some kind of funky noise going on. It's not like regular iso noise either, I think it's got something to do with the sharpening algorithm they use. My old S5000 vignetted pretty bad too.

| | | Don't worry about image stabilization. just get a tripod My cheep ass camcorder tripod works fine. The trick is to set the camera's self timer. By the time the shutter opens it's stopped shaking. As far as what camera to buy Are you only interested in digital ? I'm a film guy so I can rattle of a list of kick ass used cameras as long as your arm that can be had for under $300. I'm currently using a Nikon FA that I got (body only) for $110 the lens I'm using would cost you about $70 great meter great lens.

The shutter is broken on my FA, its stuck open, if you push it closed it just springs back up. That and the mirror on it is shattered.

| | | HP M22 Camera 4MP No optical zoom Less than $150. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles I'd like, or even much in the way of artistic control, but paired with a tripod it does a pretty good job of catching what I want it to. It's so small it lives on my belt.
