I was more worried about my gear...until it got up to my thigh. Damn NJ bogs.
People leave the manholes open to nail you, same-same with floor grates. The corroded breakaway anchor bolts are a blast, especially when it's a pipe rack holding a couple hundred pounds of pipes.
Collapsing floors are in a class by themselves; high ceilings are real special when they go with you on them. I've come close...just pretend your Jesus walking on the water. Walk softly, and QUICKLY, Grasshopper. Ha!

You have to feel the floor, listen to the surroundings. You will hear it creaking and such. Normally they will give you a little teeny bit of notice before they go, if you are paying enough attention to the floor to listen to it.

I saw a totally destroyed staircase and had an "aha" moment recently. Since all the hardware is on the sides of the stairs, there's less chance of breaking through the rotted stair itself if you hug the side, or pretend like you're straddling a hole in the middle and walk up with your feet on either side of the stair. Espressobuzz has a picture of this if you're scratching your head (I now climb weak staircases like this too):

I'd imagine there's more hardware in the floor next to walls too (especially if they're weight-bearing walls). Certainly not failsafe, but hugging the walls often feels more stable in rooms with bad floors.

Absolutely, I've had my feet go through roofs, so my only option was to straddle the joists/rafters.
Watching for holes is particularly important on construction sites. Workers have been killed picking up plywood covering holes, and then stepping into the holes.
I've heard of one kid who dropped 17 floors in this situation. I personally know a couple of guys who are permanently disabled from falling/holes. Be careful out there.

If the floor looks like it's sagging at all, or looks especially iffy in the middle for any reason (holes, water rot, etc), stick as close to the walls as possible. Test your weight gently before you step. After a while, you'll get a feel for safe floors versus unsafe floors, and it'll become second nature. You can still screw up now and then, though...case in point. lol

| | | | TeamLeader, what hole you made is kinda wierd, it's like a perfect square in the floor. Places where I've nearly fell through, I had foreknowledge that the floors weren't safe by how they looked, but that floor looks totally stable. Except for the hole.
