| | | Hey everybody, I've never been tunneling before, but I'm thinking about trying it out this weekend. I was just wondering something. What kind of shoes do you guys wear when tunneling? I mean, if there's water and stuff, should I be wearing some sort of rubber boots? Anyways, thanks.

| | | Hip waders are handy but I prefer rafting with a small outboard trolling motor. Don't forget to monitor Marine channel 16 while you're down there.

| | | I'm guessing a "small outboard trolling motor" is some kind of raft? I thought you could just walk through these tunnels... And what's marine channel 16? And what kind of radio would I need to pick that up?

Do you mean exploring a tunnel (for example. steam tunnel), or a drain? If its the former I wouldn't really worry about water, but if you think it will be flooded wading boots or even regular shoes you don't care about getting wet will be fine.

| | | Sorry, it's a drain. So I'll just wear wading boots I guess.

| | | Even some drains can have a lot more water than you think in them. Some may start off dry and suddenly have over a foot of water at one point. Some of the drains here are like that. When it comes to utility tunnels and the like, those can either be dry, a little damp, or have over four feet of water in them. I use thigh high waders that I can roll down a bit if the water isn't too bad, but if it gets deeper I can just roll them back up. Just dress accordingly and use your head.

| | | Is it honestly that fun? I prefer abandoned buildings and structures, I couldn't imagine tunnels being that interesting. But hey, I've never tried it before.

| | | Some people like it others don't. If you don't mind getting wet and dirty, it can be a lot of fun. Bring an inflatable boat

| | | I've always preferred draining over abondoned buildings. I don't know something about the dark damp quiet tunnel that attracts me. I also prefer to bring boots over inflatable boats because you have more control. I also always brings a police scanner with me to scan the local channels so i know if someone saw or heard me and called the police.

| | | I've heard not to bring police scanners, 'cause if a cop sees you walking in an open field late at night, he'll be a little suspicious of you. But if he sees you in that open field at night carrying a police scanner, then you've got some 'splaining to do.

everything counts! If it can float, that's fine with me. Of course, bring boots and waders and all that. I was just mentionning the boat as an additional source of fun

| | | It is illegal to posses them in drains because they could set off old explosives from when the drain was built and didn't detonate. Also because they don't work in drains. Kinda like being on welfare. If a cop caught you with one, he'd bend you over his knee and tan your bottom.

| | | Back to the original question, I wear army boots simply because I'm rather paranoid that under the water lies the discarded junkie's needles, and at least I'll have slightly better protection than normal shoes. (I know some people who drain barefoot...I definitely don't suggest it). That said, I'm probably overly fatalistic, but I've been draining by myself plenty of times. I think the major difference is just in the risks you're able to take when alone, versus with somebody. With a buddy, it's "Okay, it looks like bad air quality from here on in, let's try it and see what happens" or "I'll try to jump that obstacle", because you know somebody's got your back if you break your leg, or pass out - but alone, you (hopefully) just don't do the riskier stuff.

| | | I would *definatly* be paranoid about draining barefoot. It might feel cool and such to do that, but there might be all kinds of bacteria down there if you get cut. Unfortunatly where I live in the Niagara Region, most of the caves and drains here have very shalow water. Hip Waders are definatly the way to go - for me anyway.
