If the area is hazardous and requires training/gears to enter, owner's putting himself at a risk of liability by knowingly allowing untrained, uneqiupped people to enter the area.

If you were in their shoes, you'll tell them "no" too.

i agree with you, and i understand that completely. that's part of the reason i'd like to get some sort of waiver that i can give the property owners so they know if any harm comes to me or my belongings, they won't be legally liable.

although the interesting thing is (and i'm not a lawyer so i can't say one way or another) - when i offered to write a letter to the borough that allowed me into the asbestos factory stating the above, they replied that they didn't need one since i had asked to go onto the site and they were therefore not responsible for anything anyway. i don't know; any lawyers out there that could clear this up? if that's the case it would make life easier.

anyway, i never said i didn't understand their concerns - but there ARE people that will let you in - not all the time, but more frequently than you'd think. i'm no saint and have done my share of trespassing, but if UEers want to be perceived as more than just kids breaking in, getting drunk, and vandalizing sites, i think trying to act more professionally by getting permission would really help. please don't write me a letter about what a jerk i am for saying that because i sneak around like anyone else, and i don't think i'm better than anyone. i would just like to see UEers given more respect overall. when people start to see those of us who are really interested in preserving sites as adults and professionals, it will be better for all of us.

blackoutangel, I completely agree with being professional. today I just gained access to a property that is due for demo. I advised I was interested in taking pictures and I was into old buildings and he said that was fine. He also said to call him back in a few weeks and he could give me the new owners name and I could possibly save some of the windows before they are destroyed. Another property I am salvaging right now the owner told me I could have and do what ever I wanted just not to get hurt (Dont get mad, It is being demolished to so I am not stealing). You just have to catch the right person at the right time.

congratulations! as much as i love the thrill of finding a way into somewhere i shouldn't be, it's also quite a rush when someone says, 'yes, you can go in'. in my opinion, both flavors are delicious

The janitor I asked actually told me "well I have the key, but I don't have the permission." I could infiltrate it quicker than trying to figure out the person to contact, then write a letter and waiting and there's no guarantee he will give a yes, or won't add conditions.

don't misunderstand me: i live in a glass house, my friend, and am not throwing stones your way one bit. i believe in experiencing and preserving these sites above all else, but i do prefer permission when it is possible. still, i'm not even going to try to make a stance that entering without is morally wrong, because i would be a pretty big hypocrite to do so and am well aware of it.

is there no way to just get permission to enter abandoned sites?
don't movie studios do it all the time?

I did just yesterday. Real estate agents can be very helpful if you are polite, and have cameras!

I've got legal permission to enter sites before. Of course, in that case I was getting married and pouring that many people into an abandoned church seemed a bit obvious. The site was otherwise locked up tight and I'm not about to break into anything. Sometimes its worth just asking, it doesn't make any less interesting from the historical aspect.

No hardcore points though. So it goes.

To use a building for a business purpose, you'll have to bring the building up to code, which might not be economical.

The idea about getting information by touring a place so you can decide if you want ot rent or buy it could be useful. Some potential customers don't like guided tours, they think they are being led away from the bad parts. However, there are also urban legends of thieves impersonating potential customers to get into a building and strip it.

Yeah there's this antique store downtown that has some sort of crazy/weird/awesome basement and 2nd floor that I'm pretty sure are NOT used by the antique store at all and I'm thinking the only way to check it out is gonna be to just be straight up with the lady that works there. She's really nice anyway so I think she might at least give me a look around. I hope so.
