the crack is exposed, use a screwdriver to get it open by prying at the lock bar thingy (I don't know the word.)

Looks like a regular door lock to me. there's usually 2 screws you can unscrew on those. Alternatively, they become loose quite easily and you can get remove the handle.

home made lockpicks. nothing fancy. last time i poked around in the lock to get a feel for it it felt like the pins were sticking a lot.

the big thing with this lock is that i have to be able to open it quickly. the door is right on a street corner (well, pretty close to it) so i'd like to be in before a passing car wonders why the hell i'm looking so intently at the door. prying might just work. use a flathead screwdriver maybe? or i have a miniature prybar i use for pulling up nails and stuff, perhaps that would be more appropriate.

It's a standard no-name "key-in-knob" lockset, probably a kwikset knockoff made by Sears or Brinks or something. This lockset is likely to have a so-called "lock bolt" which deadlatches the latch bolt if installed correctly, but these locks are VERY rarely installed correctly. Since the door opens out, it would be best to use either a card with an angled notch cut into it, or one of those scrapers with a tang to get behind the bolt and slip it. If you want to pick it, it would be convenient to shoot a small dose of WD40 into the lock [WD40 is a terrible lubricant for preserving locks, but for your purposes it will do just fine to loosen up those sticky pins.] Practice on Kwikset locks and you should be fine.

Why bother when you can just torch the hinge pins and winch the whole door off with a truck? Hey wasn't there about 100 threads somewhere on this kind of thing?

How good are you at picking? Do you rake or single pin pick? I would reccomend squirting some graphite in there and raking it. It doesn't look like it would be hard to pick at all. I seriously doubt that there are security pins, so no need to worry about that. If you are reasonably experienced with single pin picking you could probably get a lock like that open pretty quick.

Alternately, as some have mentioned you could just go for the latch. I have found that a putty knife works very well for the "credit card" method of bypassing, they are thinner than credit cards and won't break off in the door. Also, if you can see a smaller latch in front of the main one (the type put in to stop this method of bypassing) you can dig the point of the putty knife into it and just move it aside.

Yeah I recommend HE's. Picking locks is too subtle; they might think your a pretty thief. A large crater has true explorer written all over it.

This really should be merged. Yawn.

If it was *MY* door, you could expect a swift, unannounced kick in the balls. If belongs to somebody else, expect about 1 year for a first time offense of B&E. Ask for a roommate when you get to the state prison...
