Cages outside of a prison

This is my first post here, I have been interested in UE without even knowing that that's what it was for most of my life. Just recently on another forum that I visit somone mentioned it and I thought I would check it out. I am amazed that there are this many people interested in Urban Exploration!

Anyway, so me and some friends made a discovery about 5 miles outside of a state penitentiary. What we found were large cages on top of poles about 30 feet in the air. We have no idea what they are, and we weren't really prepared to do any UE, so we didn't have a camera and I didn't have my grappling hook. However, I always carry a few things in my car, and we were able to fashion a makeshift grappling hook out of a crowbar and hook it onto a cage. After climbing up I found a door in the bottom of the cage with a lock on it, after bypassing the lock I climbed in to find that there was nothing in it at all. Just a big cage on top of a 30 foot pole. I thought it was very wierd. Does anyone know what these could be?

That sounds like some old torture cage thing that you'd see in pre-Revolution France or something...

The 'torture cage' is called a Crows Cage, b/c they suspend you in the cage and the only thing that could reach you was a crow, to peck at you.

If you actually found some of these I would love to see some pics.

I had heard of those and thought thats what it could be, but this is outside of a prison that is still in use. Actually, I'll go ahead and post the location, they are in Eloy Arizona, outside of the state penitentiary in Florence. Would a Crow's Cage ever have been used by that prison? I wish I had a camera, I had my phone but it has a horrible camera and no flash. I am hoping to return soon with proper equipment.

I'm thinking they shouldn't be crow cages. I have to admit I have no idea what they could be, but the time frame for the use of exposure as a punishment would kinda preclude them still being in one piece after being outdoors for 100+ years. Also, wouldn't exposure in AZ count as capitol punishment? When I was out at MCAGCC Twenty Nine Palms the story was that twelve hours in the sun without shade or water would kill you. I don't think exposure was ever an approved form of capitol punishment in any state, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, I figured they went out of use centuries ago. They could be forgotton from long ago. Which is why I want pics I've never seen them and didn't think any were around anymore.

It came in different shapes and models.

You can see a few here : http://www.corkscr...siena/torture.html

People were usually put in those to die while being sentenced for a specific period of time, meaning some people made it through and were freed from the cage alive.

French had the idea to suspend those where the roads crossed, far from the villages. This was done for a few reasons :

1)a lot less chance someone would come each day to feed the prisoner, meaning more chance the person would die either of dehydratation or of starving
2)if people really wanted to have revenge, they were in reality free to go and shot the prisoner themselves
3)they believed that suspending people at crossroads would make it harder for the dead to find its way back to the village to haunt people. This way, their soul would be lost at the crossroads with no where to go.

French and many other countries had a few different level of public humiliation like the cages :

-be taken through the village naked
-be attached for a week or two to the pole at the center of the village, with people able to throw rocks (and worst things) at you
-Be put in a cage
-Be taken through the village naked in a garbage bogey to be hang, with people throwing things at you
-Be burned alive
-Be hang, then burned
-Be beheaded
-Others, depending of the judge.

Voilà.

How far from the prison was this? was it line of sight to the prison?

Well, after doing a little research they definitly aren't Crow Cages. Actually, they are part of an amusment park built by an accentric man that was never opened and no one ever came to. It was night when we drove so I didn't see anything other than these cage things, but I guess there are all kinds of "sculptures" throughout the desert there. Old fire trucks, farm machinery, things like that. The man who owns it wanted it to be like a drive through amusement park with animals and sculptures, but ran out of money and auctioned off everything anyone would buy. Apparently there used to be a few oil rigs and a whole town on trailers made to look like an old west town there, but the journal I read didn't make it very clear as to whether or not they were auctioned off. Anyway, I am debating going back just to see if there are any facilities there to UE, could be interesting.
