| | looking for alternative UBC steam tunnel insertion points... < on 4/9/2006 7:15 AM >
| | | Hey out there... The one insertion point I know of has been decommissioned due to construction sometime in the last year (on campus at UBC). I need a new one... can anyone suggest something? You can put it here if you want to be cryptic or you can message me directly! It would be much appreciated. I don't think SFU was ever heated by steam, but if so, are there tunnels there too? I've never checked it out.... Cheers.

| | | No steam tunnels in SFU, as far as I know - good luck getting into UBC's.

| | | SFU has no tunnels at all. UBC tunnels had and probably still has a fair number of ways in. [last edit 4/9/2006 11:50 AM by Fallen_Knight - edited 1 times]

| | | If you're thinking of the IRC steam tunnels, there are at least 2 unlocked manholes, about four abloy locked ways in, one locked entrance from a building subbasement, one freight elevator access that leads to a motion detector, and one grate that doesn't have a lock but I can't figure out how to open the darn thing (the knob turns but the grate doesn't open). I'd say your best bet is one of the unlocked manholes, but really, make sure you know what you'd be doing because those things are in UBC's most open and most frequented locations. If you're thinking of the rest of the steam tunnels, well... there are hundreds of rumours (although I'll go on to say most rumours are turning out true). Apparently the Pit has a steam tunnel entrance, but I studied the basement plans and I saw a conduit outside the pit. After finally finding it unlocked one day, it turned out to be nothing but a dangerous air vent (you can see the exit in the bushes). Rest of the research is up to you and I hope you weren't the one who cut the bolts on the steam tunnel's gate a couple of weeks into the construction opening.

| | | Hey Anavrin. Nope, wasn't me who cut nothin'... I don't believe in vandalism. As for the IRC tunnels - ain't they connected to the larger grid? But yes I am talking about the only entrance I knew (safe, unlocked) which is now gone due to the new building close to the Starbucks (near the LRC). I found a few manholes today that seemed to be loose but they are directly in front of a highly visible area. I would say, in front of GROUND ZERO for the place we really don't want to be. I never saw that thing you mentioned near the Pit. I heard there was a utility basement under Buchanan and also one under the AgSci building that connect to the steam tunnels. Damn, I would love to find a new entrance. Any more hints? Cheers! [last edit 4/9/2006 10:22 PM by KAMALA - edited 1 times]
