Ive found the site of an old army munitions plant from WWII, but the actual structure is long gone, but i know that lots of people have found live ammo and grenades in their yards, so im gonna see if i can find anything in the woods.

Personally I'd watch out, some of that stuff may have become unstable.. and depending on what type of munitions there are there you could find chemical agents and the like that wouldn't be fun either..

most WWII era munitions plants became wildlife refuges... and have the testing areas / disposal pits cordoned off.

I'm trying to control my laughter, but this really isn't funny. HE explosives are not gun powder; they don't burn fast, they detonate. That means as fast as the shock wave travels through the explosive it releases it's chemical energy. We are talking in the neighborhood of 24,000 feet per second through a dense energy packed substance. Unbelievably dangerous. Primers for these were never one of god's more stable compounds, and age just makes them more unstable. 80 year old shells can explode and unpredictably. Disturbing the ground around a live round is a fool's folly. Leave it alone.

Bah-ha-ha-ha...your killing me. That kind of ignorance is not as uncommon as one might hope. Years ago a 7th or 8th grader found some type of line det cord that was electrically triggered. He showed it to his teacher. He/she didn't recognize the brightly colored thick "wire" from a construction site for what it was. The kid was studying magnetism, so he coils it and hooks it to a dry cell.

Pink mist, no more hand.

Lesson concluded.

Duncantx, I suggest you team up with Hunter_11 and explore these ammo dumps. Mr 11 can use his flame thrower to clear the underbrush while you can pick up the smouldering, live, unstable ammunition.

There is a fenced off field not far from my house. During WWII an ammunition plant stood there, the lot is fenced off because the ground is contaminated as well as studded with small explosive devices that were left over. Even though there is a gaping hole in the fence and a rather interesting old water tower on the lot I stay out for fear of a shrapnel related death.

a few years back here, some guy was mowing his lawn and found a live WWII era grenade and thought it was a rock, and kicked it around, but it didnt explode.

If it was someone who knew what they were doing, I might encourage it, with caution. If it was someone I liked, I'd discourage it. But it's you! Go for it. Oh yes. That one article http://www.cnn.com...sion.ap/index.html was so amazing. I laughed the entire way through. I would vastly appreciate another.

Hilarious! Human stupidity knows no bounds!

seriously, you find explosives, it's your fault if you're too stupid realize they are in fact explosive and play with them and get blown up. Simple.

Maybe annonymously report it to whoever you report leftover explosives to.

few years back in my buddies hometown in poland some kids found a Anti-Tank mine from WWII, Not knowing what it was they took it home and were playing with it.. It took out the living room almost completely along with'em.. I've heard alot of stories like that actually.. just don't bother with the risk of temperamental pissy explosives..

Yeap, it's amazing how long they last. Even corroded through, and rusted away ones can still viable and lethal. Those stories are endless and for the most part true. A lot of bombs were dropped on Germany, and a lesser extent England, and some are still there, buried deep...waiting to fulfill their deadly promise. Damn.

Wonder if that guy got the bug...seems like overkill. Ha! What a dodo.

or just read about verdun... in WWI, fuses weren't all that shit-hot. roughly 20% of the artillery that dropped across verdun from both sides... did not explode. do the math. think about it. biggest field of UXO ever.

I agree, they are NOT to be dicked with. Here in Iowa is a ammo plant. They have testing areas and such. Before 9/11 you could get permits to go deer hunting there. The one time I went down there to hunt, I took a shot at a buck. It ran and jumped over a fence that had signs "DANGER UNDETONATED MUNITIONS". The buck landed, took about 5 or 6 steps, and BOOM.

But yea, if its WWII era stuff, a strong breeze can set some of that stuff off, not to mention a 120+ lb explorer.

Only mess around with "live" munitions if you no longer wish to be "live" yourself. I'm sure it's been said already, but in the old days they used often unstable substances in their explosive mixture. This is why old mines can be a bitch to explore, as dynamite begins to break down into nitro. Alot of the munitions from the WW1 era are similarly capable of breaking down into more sensitive or even corrosive compounds. You don't want this stuff on your skin.

I'd say anything that's been left on the property will either have disintegrated by now, or be buried under mounds of dirt. If it's buried, you'd have no way of knowing what end you're touching until it's uncovered. Treat it like a buried landmine, and stay clear.

on an interesting note...most found munitions are ,..blown up! somehow thats ironic. seriously though, i cannot echo the sentiments of the others strongly enough. the professionals know better than to even move them. its usually done(the blowing up) in place, unless its just not possible. Just stay away!

Not only in Verdun but all over the western front. I live in Belgium not too far from ypres and there they dig up old ammunition every day. While most are not that dangerous I wouldn't recommend tossing or kicking them around. The farmers here stack them up along the road and give the army a call to pick them up. occasionally some farmer gets blown up when plowing the field. The fields are filled with UXO since the conditions of the battlefields was so bad some just plunged into the mud and didn't have enough resistance to make the fuse explode.

The best thing is to leave those thing alone and get some Army experts to dispose of them.

I like the thought that if one guy kicked a gernade and it didn't go off, nothing else will either. They are not supposed to go off by kicking them. The HE will just burn if lit. It needs a shock to set it off, the primer, or a blasting cap. That's what makes them safe. But over time you just can't trust them anymore. Dynamite is fairly safe for that reason, but you don't ever touch the sweaty stuff. Out West there are plenty of PBR's precision bombing ranges, not the beer. The bombs were just paint markers filled with black powder. Nothing fancy, but not to be fooled with, static electricity can set it off. Sometimes I run into old explosives in mines, and as much fun as that could be, I leave it alone. Moisture can degrade them as can time. And in a UXO field, you may just find the stuff the hard way and not by looking for it. Look it up on the net. Sandia National Lab is a good place to start. They build robots to clean this shit up because they are expendable. I know of a few people who should volunteer to save the lives of a few robots.

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!
Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite.
