| | | Is it useful for UEing and what should I get? I can find a basic one that lets me mark points, make a map within points I marked, but does not have any map built-in for $70. Is this worth getting or should I consider something else even if it costs more?

| | | Well this actually raises a good point, is it worth it just to HAVE GPS or do you really need som advanced system? Well, I say BUY that thing, just make sure it has serial NMEA output. Here's my reasoning: I bought a Garmin Geko. Cheapest GPS unit I could find, very basic, it'll vector map your waypoints as a path but it won't even load basic vector or raster maps. Enter Gameboy Advance. Using a hack found easily on the web, specifically hackaday.com, I hooked it up to my Gameboy Advance by MacGyvering an interface out of a guitar pick and a link cable. Now I have full colour raster maps on my Gameboy, and since i make the maps myself, I can use images harvested from Googl Earth, with full detail satellite imagery, and street-name overlays. Pimp. Even if you have to BUY a GBA and flash cartridge for the software, you're only lookin at like $200, and you don't have to get that right away to fully enjoy the GPS unit. simply having a readout of your coords can be enough to find a location you've already scouted on Google Earth. I say buy that cheap POS, because it's ALWAYS nice to have the option
Contrary to popular belief, death isn't just for dead people. I know I was surprised too! It can happen to anybody! Horses, fiddler crabs, even a potato can die! - Tick |
