| | | Xenon bulbs of the kind used in theatre projector lamphouses are nough to light an entire screen, but how brightly lit would a tunnel look lit by one of those? Xenon projector lamphouses are used mainly for 35 & 70 mm film projection, but there are also some used for 16mm & slide projection as well. Disadvantages are that they require AC power & some like the 1 kilowatt ORC brand of lamphouses use 110/120 volts wile higher wattage lamphouses typically use 3 phase 220/240 volt AC. No way can you explore tunnels that way unless you have a generator hidden somewhere.

Of course, there's also the danger of dropping it. I worked as a projectionist for two years at a local theatre and we had to wear a vest and full face mask when changing the xenon bulbs, just in case we dropped one. Quoted from another source: The light source in a projector is a xenon ball. It is a xenon gas and a quartz bulb under immense pressure, so much so that clothing that is provided for their handling is almost bulletproof. To strike or light this bulb, a 50,000-volt jolt is sent through it. Once lit, it runs at about 100 amps.

The run voltage is about 60 DC volts? Or is it higher? If I remember right they need a regulated DC source to run on too. Not cheap. Good light spectrum for pics though. 6000 watts is a lot. The efficiency increases as the wattage does too...how many lumens does that bad boy pump out? [last edit 3/30/2006 6:25 PM by blackhawk - edited 1 times]

| | | we use an industrial lead-acid battery. the kind that are about the size of a 2 bricks, you might have seen them lying around in factories. but we use the same bulb and ballast from a BMW 7 series.

| | | Posted by Duncantx if anyone in the DFW area or KC area are interested, we make custom spotlights modified w/ HID bulbs from a BMW 7 series. they also have a lead-acid battery that will run about 1 hour 20min. the width of the front is about 1ft across, and it has a shoulder strap. all in all, itll probably cost about $120, not bad for the brightest light money can buy. email me or come UEing w/ us and we can give a demonstration. trust us, this thing has gotten us out of trouble a lot by showing it off to cops. the love it!
|
For those who prefer something equally powerful, but somewhat smaller and those outside of DFW area, Harbor Freight Tools makes a very competitively priced unit that is comparable. http://www.harborf...f?Itemnumber=93175 Weighs 16 lbs. Comes with shoulder strap and car and home charger [last edit 3/31/2006 9:02 PM by Deuterium - edited 1 times]

Speaking of generators, a Honda EU1000i generator can give a sustained 900W output and weighs only twice(29 lbs) as much as the HID portable light and you can power a light ten times as more powerful light like a 400W metal halide spot light with an electronic ballast(to keep weight to minimum) for hours on a tank and carrying an extra quart of gasoline wouldn't be too hard if the few hours of runtime isn't adequate.

Yeah there's no way that your 12 million cp is actually 12 million...there's a discrepancy in the way it's measured that lets them get by with it but maxabeam dominates all .
|
I don't care what the measurement is... it puts my luxeons to shame, and it is so hot and so bright that after being on only a few minutes the plastic lens cover is hot enough to give you a serious burn with only a moment's contact. I pointed it at a thermometer, and in 10 minutes it had raised the temperature of the thermometer by 10 degrees C. -av
