Garage Keys?

I've been to a few different buildings that had garage access and outside the garage door I found a small metal box with a weird key chained to it. They didn't fit any of the locks in the area. Any idea what they might be? Here's a link to my contact sheet pictures: http://www.deviantart.com/view/30748687/

Thanks.

From what I understand, these keys are for guards. They walk around with a device that records whether they put this key into it, and it proves that they actually did their rounds for the night.

Might be wrong, but makes sense.

Good lord, I haven't seen one of those since, errr...... sixteen years ago when I did a stint in light blue at an agricultural site on the outskirts of town. Those big heavy clocks were easy to defeat and tamper with.

I've seen those in a bonded whiskey warehouse. Was wondering what they were. Thanks.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one confused by those damn things. They add a lot to the abandoned look of places cuz they're all so rusted.

That's what they are. Some small variations in the design but generally the same concept.

I used one at the first site I worked at as a guard back in '86. It was a factory and that clock was a heavy bastard for sure. One of my co-workers was accused of not doing his rounds and was fired. When the tape was read, he was rehired with an apology from the company. He quit two weeks later though.

Here's a picture of a Detex station taken at the CNE just before the Grand Stand was demolished in 1998/1999.

I remember doing my rounds once in the wintertime, slipping on the ice on a small set stairs, and landing on my rear end. As if that wasn't bad enough, the trusty Detex clock followed me down and landed square on my face. Not sure how long I laid there before the birds stopped chirping. If anyone was standing around they would probably have been too incapacitated laughing to help. ;)

Not surprised about your coworker. Security companies treat their people like dispensible pieces of shit and will both hire and fire on the whim of whatever small minded git is the "guard manager" of the company that week. Nice having the same smart boss year after year now, and not worrying about being written up for something stupid like not wearing black socks, hehe.

Ouch! That would hurt. One of my coworkers was idly swinging the clock and it came to the top of the arc, did not make it the rest of the way and came down hitting him square in the crotch. I wondered why he was talking walking funny when I relieved him.

Funny you should mention the socks! Guess what almost happened to me? That's right. I was wearing grey socks and the supervisor pointed them out to me. Fortunately she was a pretty good supervisor and just asked me to remember the black socks for the next time.
