I've read in here about how converting to LED's gives you a brighter light up close, but what about distance? Do LED's have the same "throw" as regular bulbs?

The reason I ask is 'cause I usually use my lights as spots, not flood.

I believe the main reason for the rumors about LED lights is that they used to be only (commonly anyway) flood lights. If it has a focusable or spot beam the distance could be comparable. Depending on style and number of LEDs and the ammount of current run through it any light output is theoretically possible.

In reality, there are a number of good LED lights that put out as much or more light than most traditional lights. In either world, you get what you pay for.

Lights that use a Luxeon Star LED usually have very good spot throw. Surefire, Streamlight, and Inova make good luxeon LEDs.

Update, I just got a now discontinued (means it was on sale, woohoo!) Princeton Tec headlamp. It throws a good, wide spot with a 1 watt LED. It also gets 8-10 hours on 2 AA battery's, is small, impact resistant and waterproof to 100 meters. All for $25. Aside from the twist on switch, it is a great light.

You were right, it was a PT. A very nice one!

This is the link. I have found it marginally cheaper, but REI will ship to their retail stores for free. (they don't stock it in store, because it's discontinued) If anyone decides to buy this, but isn't an rei member you should use my member number, because I get 10% back at the end of the year.

For anyone looking for a small Luxeon headlamp, I highly recomend the Princeton Tec EOS

It's smaller and brighter than the Matrix 2, plus it is regulated for constant output, and has three selectable light levels. I used an EOS for some steam tunnel exploration a couple of weekends ago, and it was great.

Oh, here's a review of the EOS.

I thought about the eos, but I wanted a double A powered light. The eos is nice though.

3C maglite, eats batteries though, I'm looking to replace the bulb with a luxeon 3-watt LED. Unfortunately none of the 'drop-in' conversion bulbs seem to be available in the UK.

Also a 2D and 2AA pair of cheapo rubber-bodied lights which aren't much used, a small keyring-style blue LED light which is useless for exploring but good for reading maps, or finding stuff in your bag in the dark, and one of those 6-volt warning lamps that you see on roadworks barriers at night. It spreads the light very dimly and widely, so it works great as a light for providing a bit of light in a large area, and for reading files and the like without ruining your vision when you stumble into a dark basement.

My lineup at the moment:

Old, beat to hell 3C Maglight that I found in my driveway the night before my car got broken into (hmm...). It either has a flaky bulb or switch though - if it's the bulb I'm going to look into an LED conversion for it (you have to hit it a couple of times to get it to turn on).... but hell, it was free.

Cheap Brinkman 2AA LED flashlight - no distance whatsoever to it, but in the 3 years I've had it (with nearly daily use doing pizza delivery, trying to light dark paths and the like) I've changed the batteries... once. This one stays in my glovebox.

Dorcy 3AAA LED flashlight (1 watt Luxeon LED) - this thing is friggin BRIGHT with some decent range, and claims a 30 hour runtime. I've got 4 or 5 hours on it so far and haven't noticed any dimming yet.

Finally, a 1M Candlepower spotlight I keep in the car - although it runs off my cigarette lighter. Mostly use this when I'm trying to find addresses while at work. Used to have a cordless one, but it wouldn't recharge after the battery went flat once.

2d Mag; it's largely ineffective in some places with lots of dirty walls such as old mine buildings up here. The light is just absorbed.
Here's a great accessory; Nite Eyez grip and clip. Neoprene sleeve for the light, with a clip for a belt. I rigged it up with a strap so you wear the light like a bandolier. You can put it under a coat for public approaches without looking stupid walking up with a maglite in you back pocket. With the strap, the light always comes to hand when desired.

Tick's guide to fixing flaky Maglites:

1) remove the head, tailcap, and batteries
2) pop off the rubber piece that covers the switch
3) take a 2mm allen wrench (2.5mm or the standard equivalent may also work), and stick it in the hole in the middle of the plastic switch button thing
4) Turn the allen wrench counter-clockwise to loosen the screw holding the switch assembly into the Maglite body
5) remove the allen wrench, and push on the switch assembly near the bulb - it should slide right out of the body
6) use the allen wrench to unscrew the little screw near the bulb on the switch assembly
7) once everything falls apart, look inside the plastic post that held the bulb sliding thing... see that metal strip? clean it with some fine sandpaper
8) re-assemble everything, and lube the o-rings and the switch cover with silicone grease (available at Lowes, in the plumbing dep't) to maintain water resistance
9) if Maglite is still flaky, replace the bulb

I generally carry 3 lights if i'm going into any dark places just in case one burns out.

I wear a Petzel Saxo headlamp for general area light and hands-free work. Runs on 4 AA batteries and a fresh set will last 7-9 hrs.

I carry a Gerber LX 3.0 LED flashlight because its small and bright. It has a 3 watt LED and provides some of the whitest light I've seen. It runs on 3 AA batteries and a fresh set of will last 40-50 hrs.

And last I carry a Mini-Maglite. 2 AAA batteries for 5-6 hrs of usable light when I need to be discreet or just need some closeup light.

Although I'm considering replacing the Maglite with a Gerber Ultra LED. Similar light output as the Maglite but the LED will never burn out, its smaller and it only takes 1 AA battery for 30 hrs of usable light (so the advertising says).

I've got a cheap walmart flashlight, it costs like 3 bucks (the replacement battery costs more than the flashlight itself.) So I don't care if it gets damaged or lost, and when the battery runs out, I just toss it and get a new one.

i do this, if i ned to be stealthy, i've got a 2C lantern with red/green filters, ive also got a 3D maglite for drains.

Just added another one to my collection. I now have:

Brinkmann Maxfire LX (2 CR123A lithium) - review here, pretty much a cheaper version of a Surefire G2. Bright, bright, bright, did I say bright? Have to order batteries in bulk to get a decent price though. The lowest I've found is $1.25/ea from surefire.com or batterystation.com, retail is something insane like $5+.

Dorcy 1 Watt Luxeon LED (3 AAA) - review here. Probably 1/4 the brightness of the Brinkmann, but batteries last a lot longer.

Cheap Dorcy lantern (4 D) - it's big, it's bulky, it's bright yellow, but it's good for draining.

3C Maglite. Considering a 3 or 5 watt Luxeon LED conversion for this.

I had a 2AA Brinkmann LED flashlight (just a cheap one from Walmart) - it was okay, not bright enough, but insane battery life. I gave it to Armed Geoduck / Abandon-X / whatever the fuck his name is this week.

I got an everLED brand replacement bulb for my 3D MAG its a drop in replacement and does an awesome great job but its kinda pricey. I got the side emitting diode model so the MAG's focus feature still works

Carrying a Surefire G2 have a Brinkmann LX for a backup most nights.

Brinkmann rechargeable Max Million and Dual Xenon spot lights for big lighting.

Oh yeah the blue filters, those are for finding blood. Or following blood trails. Makes the blood show up almost black.

Anyone tried one of those big honkin HUMVEE 10 million cp rechargeables yet?
