| | | Posted by Viper As for coloured lenses, red lights preserve your night vision better and red is harder for security/police to spot from distances. Blue is just more soothing to the eye.
|
Red also improves contrast. You can see the contrast of objects signiffigantly better with red. A headlamp with red LED is nice. Filters are kind of wasteful given that they just block some of the light.

| | | I primarily use a Petzl duo headlamp, just had to fix it as a piece of grit was stuck in the switch. I also use a 4-D maglite on occasion, and a mini-maglite as backup.

| | | I mainly us a 4-C cell maglight. What I dont like about it is that it eats batteris fairly quickly, 4 at a time, which gets pretty expensive after awhile. Even with good name-brand batteries, it still doesnt last as long as I would like. Its also a pretty big flashlight, too big to stuff into your pocket, so whenever I go exploring, I always have to carry a backpack with me to store my flashlight and extra batteries. If I was going to buy another maglight, I would buy a smaller one, maybe one that only requires 2 batteries.

| | | Luxeon just sent me a freebie FTC3. I'm not sure why, but I don't look gift horses in the mouth. Or do I? Overview: I'm not a big fan of LED flashlights, but this thing is impressive. It uses a 3 watt lambertian "Star" LED with an LED Dynamics regulator to maintain brightness as the batteries discharge. Powered by 3 C-cell batteries it's supposed to run for 15 hours at full brightness though the math doesn't support that claim... The light is switched on/off by rotating the battery cap. Momentary lighting can be achieved by pushing on the battery cap. This is tacky, as it could accidentally be turned on while you're hiding in the shadows from Jason or Freddie. Abuse Tolerance: The case is hard-anodized aluminum with a chrome-like finish. Being a destructive bastard, I tried using the FTC3 to saw through my Mini MagLite: Yep, it'll do that. Next I grasped the flashlight firmly and jabbed a sheet of half-inch birch plywood to see if it would be effective as a weapon. Yep, you can easily take out ribs, two at a time, using the FTC3. I showed it to Rolf and he bit it, then licked it a lot to apologize, proving it can withstand a vicious attack by one or more 90-pound puppies. Visual: The light is kinda cold -- maybe 6800K -- but is very effective at close range. The degree of color distortion under this light is barely acceptable, but a simple LED swap can cure that. At 30 feet, it's much brighter than a 3 D-cell MagLite. Attempting to illuminate The Foreverbarking Dog that some neighbors installed a few doors down the street revealed that the FTC3 is not very effective at long-range (75-yard) flood illumination. Potential Mods: I may swap-out the white Luxeon Star LED for one of their new "warm-white" LEDs. Also, The regulator they use can accept a 5K potentiometer to control the LED current at about 87% efficiency. There's room to install a PC-mount pot on the battery cap and ribbon cable could be run from the cap to the regulator. This would make the light 100% variable-intensity which is, of course, much better. I think this is made by LumiLens and you can get them for about $25USD. I wouldn't pay that much, but it's a damn fine flashlight when you get it for free.

| | | A regulated 3-watt Luxeon Star flashlight for $25? If that's true, it's a hell of a steal. I looked on the LumiLens website, and they don't have this flashlight on there (neither does LumiLeds, the company that makes Luxeon LED's). Elektrolumens makes a 3C 3-watt flashlight called the FT-3C, which almost fits your description, but it's not regulated, and sells for $60 I think. Do you have a link? Or any pictures?

$25 was a guess. >> This was free << No link. It came wrapped in bubble wrap and no description other than a typed thank you note. It looks like a big FT-3C but this has "FTC3" inside the batt-cap - it's the only text on the thing other than "LUMILEDS" on the LED module, and "LED Dynamics" on the regulator. Maybe this is a second, a prototype, or a knock-off of something that wasn't put into production. Yet. Whatever it is, it's nice and heavy and I just learned the hard way not to sit it on top of a Lian-Li aluminum computer case. The LED and regulator are worth about $40 the way I buy them. The case is kinda typical other than the coating. The colimator looks like a giant, irradiated, and cornfed version of that lens that LumiLeds puts on the Star-O modules.

| | | Funny, I found one of those K-Mart headlamps in my front yard years ago. I brought it to the BWCA with me. It made me decide I liked headlamps, but bought a better one asap. That one hit the trash immediately after.

"A Halo 2 flashlight, bending the very limits of science. Once charged in your USB port, this LED flashlight will blast ultra-powerful LED light for up to 100,000 hours, sending trillions of photons screaming through the atmosphere at relativistic speeds where time ceases to have any true meaning, all to help you find a dropped quarter, or find the Webmaster’s keyhole when he’s drunk. Again."

|
The Inova X5 takes CR123A 3V lithium batteries... In stores, these usually sell for something like $7US apiece (!), however, they can be found online for as cheap as $1 apiece. Surefire.com is a good online source (currently $15 for a box of 12 batteries), but they charge an additional $15 to ship to Canada. Your best bet would be to go to candlepowerforums.com and ask the flashlight geeks there about the cheapest place to buy 3V lithium batteries in Ontario. The X5 is an excellent flashlight, as long as you can find an affordable source for batteries.

| | | I've mentioned this in other threads before, but I've been running my X5 on the same batteries for months. There has been almost no change in light output after many hours of use. The batteries last a long time so even at higher prices you won't end up paying too much. Certainly less than AA, C, or D batteries on a conventional light.
