P1 is pretty neat, but it's also expensive (~$45-50 USD shipped) I might get this one instead though: http://www.flashli.../dorcy_super1w.htm It's USD 20 at Target in the states. not sure where to get it in Canada though.

Indeed but the P1 is 3 watt.. 28 lux, compared to your typical 1 watt luxeon LED is around 20, excepting larger ones such as the Innova T3. In fact how I view the P1 is the output of a T3 (mind you I do not have a T3, have not seen it's output) in the package of a minimag (I (think) shorter but a bit fatter) I Already own to Luxeon I's, so I am looking for something a bit different. and the cells are quite cheap for the P1, online.

| | | Really dim LED lights are useful too. I picked up a $5 Energlzer LED penlight which is about the size of a Sharpie marker and it gives off just enough light to navigate your way and pretty good lighting for inspecting close up objects. Sometimes, you don't want to let the whole world see your beams going about.

It isn't the flash light that is special. The power is in the special, expensive lithium battery. 6D Maglite is quite bright and it is big, but most of the bulk is allocated for housing batteries. The same light sawed down to eliminate the battery compartment size and fitted w/ high power lithium batteries instead would be eqaully bright at a fraction of size.

Interesting first post. Think I'll just use that link you provided and order a dozen, maybe 2 dozen, what the hell it's Christmas. Think I'll have some spam for breakfast too. It's hard to believe just how good gelatinous, congealed spam can taste, even after soooo many times. Welcome to UER.

The "3W" and "1W" LED emitters are quite similar. The real difference is how hard they're driven. There's a night and day difference between the same wattage LED rated flashlights because of this. Also, the Mag 3D LED you noted as "1W" is considered a "3W" light like the P1 is considered "3W" in marketing terms. The Fenix P1 is said to produce ~28 units of light on a review site but a 4AA "1 watt" UK Fire flashlight produces the same output and have a longer projection range (throw). The latter is much larger, but most of the space is allocated to house the batteries. It is the lithium battery technology that allows such a high output for the size. If you were to saw down a 6D maglite and convert to 3 x CR123A, it would be equally bright as before, but much much smalle so there's nothing special about what makes the P1 so bright. Compared: Fenix P1 ("3" W rated) 28 units throw: 31 units Mag 3AA LED ("3W" rated) 40 units throw: 45 units Mag 3D LED ("3W" rated) 48 units throw: 87 units

| | | I think the best flashlight for general/infiltration purposes is a surefire A2 Aviator, because it has a super bright incandescant bulb and a set of LEDs (your color choice) so you can a really bright torch or use the LEDs to sneak around and not mess up your night vision. I also find the princeton tech Eos to be a very use full little headlamp

I also have that light and it is great. It's worth mentioning that the Streamlight 4AA Luxeon is the only flash light of the three you mentioned that is approved for use in places you explore where flammable atmosphere maybe present. The Mag's your average consumer light and it isn't rated for use in hazardous places. I'm not sure what category Fenix is, but none of their products are listed for use in dangerous places, so it could ignite gases, dust and fiber either in normal switch operation or internal malfunction.
After looking up some info, this is what I found on that Streamlight 4AA http://www.streaml...fact-sheet/159.pdf It is rated for Division 2 for class I & II. Class I Div 2 A,B,C,D Class II Div 2 F,G Class III, T3C
Class I - Gases or vapors: Locations are areas where flammable gases may be present in sufficient quantities to produce explosive or flammable mixtures. Division 2: flammable gases usually not present, but could be present due to abnormal conditions. Group A - Atmospheres containing acetylene (welding gas) Group B - Atmospheres containing hydrogen or gases or vapors of equivalent hazard such as manufactured gases Group C - Atmospheres containing ethyl-ether vapors, ethylene, or cyclo-propane. (i.e. refineries) Group D - Atmospheres containing gasoline, hexane, naptha, benzene, butane, propane, alcohol, acetone, benzol, lacquer solvent vapors, or natural gas (i.e. exploring refineries) *Class II – Dust: Locations can be described as hazardous because of the presence of combustible dust. *Division 2 - Surface accumulated, non-air suspended -Group F - Atmospheres containing carbon black, coal, or coke dust (i.e. power houses, boilers) -Group G - Atmospheres containing flour, starch, or grain dust (i.e. exploring grain elevators) *Class III: combustible fibers. (i.e. textile factories) [last edit 12/9/2006 8:28 PM by Deuterium - edited 1 times]
