| | | What type of flashlight do you use? I have a mini maglite (AA version) and a 2C-cell maglite. And i was wondering about the different types of flashlights that you use. I personally, would like an INOVA X5 or something like it.

| | | I bring my 2AA Minimag everywhere I go. I have a 2D Maglite as a backup if I remember to bring it (I find I can get along fine with the Minimag in most places and it can fit in my pocket). For really big/dark places I have a 6V Lantern. Almost never use that one though, as I find it too heavy and awkward. Not to mention the fact that it's impossible to conceal the way the minimag is. I also have a red LED keychain light, which I haven't put to any use yet other than finding keyholes in the dark.
So there I was, in this creepy old hallway... |

| | | My current flashlight setup: For drains & big tunnels, I use an Underwater Kinetics Vectra 4D light, and a Princeton Tec Yukon HL LED headlamp. The Vectra is awesome: it's like a 6V lantern, but dive-rated to 500', and if the bulb burns out I can switch to the backup bulb with the flick of a switch (don't even have to open up the light!). The Yukon HL is decent, it's comparable in brightness to an incandescent headlamp, and has excellet runtime thanks to the Luxeon and 5mm LED's. For everything else, I have an Underwater Kinetics 4AA eLED, and a Pelican M6 LED flashlight. The eLED is a little brighter than a Mini-Maglite, but is fully regulated, so it has constant output for the first 10+ hours. And it uses a Luxeon Star 1-watt LED, which will never burn out. The Pelican M6 also uses a Luxeon 1-watt LED, but is much, much brighter, because it uses two 3-volt Lithium batteries. It actually puts out more light than my big Maglite, with a much smoother beam, and the LED should never burn out. [last edit 10/28/2004 12:31 AM by tick - edited 1 times]

| | | Ahhh, the classic flashlight thread returns... anyhow... I have: 2AA minimag: in my school backpack. goes everywhere. use it sometimes for working on my car. 3D maglite: weapon of choice. fulton 991 (military anglehead, 2D): backup of choice, also, has red / blue filters for stealth??? (i'm not a particularly stealthy kinda guy. i just disappear when i need to.) 12V rechargeable brinkmann spotlight. 2 million candela. 2 lead acid batteries. ~25 minutes per battery. more light than my car's bright headlights... for when nothing but canned sunlight will do. excellent for lighting large empty spaces on long exposures. also, tunnels. i still need to buy a maglite solitaire and convert it to lithium LED...other than that, a xenon bulb for the 3D mag, and perhaps one of those chinese surefire knockoffs... xenon+lithium batteries. mmmm.... --dev

| | | Post by devnull: has red / blue filters for stealth??? I think that the filters are for reading documents in the dark without affecting your nightvision too much. As with you devnull, I carry my mini-mag where ever I go, Plus a solitare on my keys. [last edit 10/28/2004 5:42 PM by Grey_Fox - edited 2 times]

| | | How many of these threads are there? Anyway, I have a cheap 5 white led and krypton headlamp. I also have an X5 second gen and a knock off of it. I like both a lot though the X5 has a better momentary switch. The only drawback is no focussed beam. Any el cheapo flashlight should work for that. If you have the cash get a surefire with both heads. Worth every penny. The LED will light a whole room perfectly! The bulb is even better.

| | | I am reconsidering my idea of the x5 mainly because of the lithium batteries... they are so damned expensive.

| | | Buy them from the sure-fire website. You have to but larger quantities, but they work out to just over a $1 a piece. I've been using the same 2 in my inova all summer and fall with almost no change in light out put. They claim 10 hours peak and 100 usable. I use my headlamp more which takes 3 AAA batteries. Those I've changed. The inova is a secondary light, but has MANY hours on it on the same $2.50 worth of batteries. Much cheaper in the long run than buying AA's, C's or D's for regular bulbs.

| | | I've got a cheap walmart flashlight, it costs like 3 bucks (the replacement battery costs more than the flashlight itself.) So I don't care if it gets damaged or lost, and when the battery runs out, I just toss it and get a new one.

| | | I was checking out the house of knives site, and came across this LED light. I was wondering does anyone have this one and you think I should bother with it? http://www.houseof...uct.php?sku=012831 It does look like it may be useful with the detachable magnetic base.

| | | I would want to know more about LED and power setup, light output, battery type and longevity, body construction. It looks gimmicky. OK, I took a moment and looked around for it. It still looks gimmicky, but can be had for less than half the price you posted. It claims to be water proof, which is a plus. I would assume it's worth buying as a cheap keychain light if you get it cheap enough. You'd probably just throw it away when the batteries died. It takes 4 watch batteries which are a pain and expensive. There is much better out there though.

| | | 1 million CP cordless rechargable spotlight. 3 D-cell Mag. 4 C-cell Mag. 2 AA Mini Mag. 3 AAA Garrity single LED. 1 AAA solitaire Mag. Just got the Garrity LED. More or less the same light pattern (spot) and intensity as the Brinkmann 2 AA LED. I popped out the projector lens and it now has a good flood pattern. Came with red and blue lenses and a belt pouch. House of knives is overpriced, but the more expensive lights there are good quality. Ususally the smaller keychain size LED's don't light up as much as larger LED's or incandescents. Smaller size lights are only good for lighting up areas right in front of you. As for coloured lenses, red lights preserve your night vision better and red is harder for security/police to spot from distances. Blue is just more soothing to the eye.
