|  | | | I haven't used my respirator in such a long time, I've grown a beard since then.
It's uncomfortable to put it on, which I suppose I could live with, but will a beard prevent the mask from sealing to my face properly?

The material that the masks are made of now would probably protect even with a short beard or goatee.

| | | | Have you tried the test with the respirator on? ie: cover the cartridges and breathe in. If air gets in, no dice. (At least that was in the instructions that came with mine, it's how you test if it's tight enough). Technically, it's not as good as being clean-shaven, but if a respirator isn't something you have to wear every single day, and you strap 'er on tight enough, you should be fine.
Try trimming, I keep my beard trimmed pretty short and it works fine, it just gets sketchy when I go all Grizzly Adams. Especially when the beard gets out of hand and I've freshly shaved my head, but that's a whole other issue.

Yeap, rules are there for good reasons. No beard. No hair at area where it seals to your face. Must fit, and seal perfectly. If your in a heavily contaminated area you may need to take more precautions. It's not when or how you breath it in, it's if!

Your welcome. I blasted structural steel for a couple years. Air-fed hoods are much better. Respirators are a pain. It's easier not to kick up the dust when possible than going around playing Darth Vader.

| | | | I have a goatee and the respirator seems to seal pretty well with the suck-test. My goatee isn't that big though. It probably would be better to be clean shaven but it seals well enough that I feel pretty comfortable with it. A full beard might be another story though.

| | | | where I work, we have to use the full face respirators because of exposure to ClO2 (chlorine dioxide) and H2S (hydrogen sulfide) gas. We have to keep clean faces otherwise our gas masks don't seal and we'll expire.
