Use of GPS receivers is becoming ever more popular, and GPSrs are becoming ever cheaper, and it is only inevitable that several organizations have created websites which list, by category, various kinds of places of interest, including:

  • airplane crash sites
  • abandoned ships
  • active naval target ships
  • hot springs
  • old spring houses
  • old bridges
  • lighthouses
  • outdoor mazes
  • iron furnace ruins
  • railroad roundhouses
  • castles
  • mountain bike trailheads
  • old water mills
  • waterfalls
  • ghost towns
  • ship wrecks
  • sunken submarines
  • boardwalks
  • bogs/swamps
  • natural arches
  • windmills
  • butterfly houses
  • foucault pendulums
  • drive-in movie theaters
  • turtle crossings
  • water towers
  • strange mailboxes
  • waychapels (non-denominational chapels at the edge of highways and towns)
  • plank roads
  • time capsules
  • monasteries
  • static aircraft displays
  • payphones
  • spots of geological interest
  • etc... (a million more categories; too many to list here...)

At this point, the two best websites for organizing and offering this information by category (and usually searchable by state, region or zip code) are:
http://www.waypoint.org/
and
http://www.waymarking.com

For only spots of geological/earth history interest, there is
the Earth Cache Site, created and maintained by geologists, at http://www.earthcache.com

And lastly, for a rather complete listing of payphones, you may wish to also try (in addition to the waymarking site) the payphone directory at the Phoneswarm site at httt://www.phoneswarm.com

Have fun exploring!

with care,
