Besides houses, I wonder how much industrial stuff is really abandoned.
I took this shot of Domino Sugar, about 3 weeks before the storm from a steamboat:

Seems tacky as hell to UE a disaster site.

Erm, what hobby do you participate in? Because I enjoy going through abandoned locations where some of the most egregious abuses ocurred; where people were more or less tortured; where people died, and were cut open; where people were imprisoned. Don't see the difference, except that Nawlins is much more recent.

Oooooo I would be afraid I would find a body or something. But then I guess that might be a good thing. So that their family would know what happened. I feel sorry for those people.

Nothing to be afraid of - only in the movies do bodies rise to attack you. And don't forget about the photo ops that a body would provide.

Edit: fixed spelling on a word.

I follow UE but i prefer industrial sites, everyone has a different view on the subject, if horror background stories to a location are your thing, knock yourself out but where i explore there has probably never been any of that, maybe the odd accident.

FUCK THAT look what you can find in New Orleans!!!!!

Volunteer helping in hurricane-damaged home finds $30,000 hidden in wall

Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS --
Trista Wright was spending her spring break cleaning out hurricane-damaged homes when she discovered some unusual papers among the moldy plaster board and debris.

"I started raking it out of the air conditioner vent. I thought it was garbage and I was going to shovel it up, but I bent down to pick it up, and it was a stack of $100 bills, and then more and more kept coming," the 19-year-old said today on CNN.

By an unofficial count, it was more than $30,000.

Wright and fellow students notified the organizers of their church mission, who told the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

The woman who owned the house, who has asked that she not be identified, was as shocked as Wright.

"She was speechless," said Wright, an Armstrong Atlantic State University student was among 175 Georgia college students spending their week off volunteering in the city's Arabi area.

Deputy Gary Adams verified the identity of the woman who owned the home.

Adams said it's not uncommon to find weapons or medications behind the walls of homes, but this was the biggest sum of hidden money he had heard of. "It's good to see someone find something like that and turn it over to proper authorities and the rightful owner," he said.

The homeowner said she suspects the money belonged to her father, who was wary of banks. The home had been in the family for generations, she said.

"I had my suspicions about the money at first, but once I met the family and talked to the woman, I have no doubt she's telling the truth," said Aaron Arledge, one of the organizers of the mission. "She said her father grew up during the Depression and must not have told anyone in the family about it before he died."

The one-story house was flooded to the eaves by Katrina and, aside from the hidden money, none of its contents could be saved, church officials said.

"To see that woman's face when we told her about the money, that's the kind of positive story that makes all the hard work worthwhile," said the Rev. Warren Jones Jr. of New Salem Baptist Church in the Ninth Ward, which has served as a base for church missions. "She said it was a miracle. And when you think about it, it was."

Haley Barton, a fellow student who was in the house with Wright, said there was never a question of keeping the money.

"I think that it's expected of us as young people, or people of any age this day, to go in and take it and not be faithful or trustworthy in turning it in, but that wasn't even an option for us," she said.

Dead bodies? Good it's not closer, and too bad it isn't. Pics would be ghastly, the smell would linger. Yummy.

I so would have stuffed that money in my pockets and not told anyone.
Just kidding. How cool for the owner to get all the money after what she'd been through.

Hey, nothing wrong with that either. I think anyone in that area deserves every good fortune that befalls them. Certainly aren't going to get anything like that from the govt.

In a dire attempt to avoid a political tack...I think UEing in Katrina-hit areas would be fine, as long as you did so with the intention of helping out; you know, helping government aid groups evaluate damage to houses, etc.

fuck that. opportunity is opportunity.

i'm not going to avoid exploring in detroit because those areas were ruined and discarded over a 50 year span of mismanagement and abuse.

just like i'm not going to avoid NOLA just because it's a disaster area. the whole deal wouldn't have been nearly as rough if the american government had been on the fucking ball and gotten aid on it's way down there before the storm hit.

any fucking moron with a computer that can play a radar loop could see that NOLA was going to get fucked, but the government was entirely too preoccupied with a failing invasion and occupancy of a foreign nation; there simply were no national guard or other domestic aid workers to send in on a day's notice; the humanitarian efforts, as seen, take a week or more to mobilize.

what i was really amazed with, was the american corporations, who usually make the government look like the good guys... they really stepped up, PR stunt or not.

Im curious, where are all the damn lawyers and why is there no criminal negligence suits being filed???? Id like to see them go for Bush but hell FEMA is a good target too. If you have done any searches at all, you already know Bush was well aware of what was going to happen and didnt do shit. In ANY court of law, that is criminal negligence!!!

As well as bush knew, those people did too. i personally would never ask the gov for any thing and dont think anyone else should either! i think the whole ordeal was handled completely wrong, but for the poeple that live there, they should have got the heck out! if someone told you there was a 90% chance that a car was gonna hit you if you stayed in one spot, youd move so why is this any different? if you know your house is gonna flood, dont sit around waiting on those paumpus pricks to bring you food and water and a master card, take what ya got and get where you can go!

uh, no offense, but that's kind of an ignorant thing to say. You gotta understand, a lot of these people, especially in the poorer regions, had little else besides their house and the things in it. That was their investment. To just up and walk away when there's a storm warning, no matter how severe, isn't that simple. Not to mention, where would they go? And how? You're assuming they a) had cars, and empty interstates to drive them on, or b) enough cash to feel comfortable buying expensive plane tickets for their whole family at the drop of a hat.

Hatred is weakness! Joy is paramount! Let all else fall by the wayside.
