Abandoned Underground Station at Westbrook mall?

I was in Westbrook's admin office the other day, and they had "historical" news clippings or sommat on a plaque on the wall. One of them mentioned future plans for an underground Ctrain station to be put in (obviously with a new southern leg for the lrt rails).

The article was dated from 1993, if I remember correctly. (I'll have to check again later on tonight).

Having just arrived in Cal-town, I've not been privy to the news and goings on of Calgary Transit over the last 13 years. My partner was telling me that it's built, and abandoned, but he doesn't know of any way in, short of excavation, and possibly blasting.

Since these tend to be pretty high profile, I was wondering if anyone else had been there?

The only abandoned LRT line in Calgary is the one under city hall which is not as exciting as one might hope. A few guys from UEA have done it but they did it with permission from the mayor of Calgary directly. It is tight tight tight.

There are some cool smaller util tunnels in the area tho that anyone can do and do provide access to in to some buildings nearby.

The city of Calgary has maps of all underground workings available for viewing to the public at city hall.

Many buildings have provisions in their basements for LRT stations/tracks, but the line was never built. In fact the original LRT plan called for extensive underground lines and maybe just maybe if the economy continues booming some of that will eventually be implimented. To be perfectly honest though I doubt it. Calgary's really bungled the public transit system.

So to answer your question, there may be a big rooms in the basement that's now used for storage. Go check! ;)

Found this on the Underground Ozarks site. Interesting similarity to Calgary, but they get the lost history discovery award for this one.

"We'd heard rumors about Kansas City's mysterious 8th Street Tunnel since they rediscovered it. This abandoned streetcar tunnel had been essentially lost for forty years until a local realty company found the sealed entrance and reopened it. Actually two twin tunnels, the 8th Street Tunnel is well over a hundred years old, with one tunnel being built in 1888 and the other around 1903. Thanks to a few friends of ours in Kansas City, we were lucky enough to get a peek at the historic tunnel".

100 years ago I think that area was unsettled tall grass Prairie.

The vast majority of calgary was built after WWII.

People call my house and old houe, it was built in 1959. Back then the city limit was the end of my street and now my election riding has the word central in it.
