| | | Anybody ever wonder exactly what's under the south east corner of Nose Hill Park? It's just south of the police station, which makes curiousity seem kinda... stupid, at best. But as they say, curiosity killed the cat. I'm looking at it on Google Earth (wicked awesome free planning tool) right now, and whatever's in them, there are two large buildings underground, with only one directly connected entrance (correct me if I'm wrong here)

| | | It's a drinking water reservoir. during the day it empties during peak times of demand, and later on at night it refills, to give the city water supply some buffer room. there's another one right by 14st NW, and Berkeley (sp?) gate.

| | | Good eye. Reminds me of the old Diefenbunker in Nanaimo, except larger (Yes, entrances completely sealed behinds tons of dirt, no, no exterior shafts allowing access).

| | | We have a killer res, buried only when they were excavating sites in the Arbutus Village area. I call it the 1910 res, it is in one of our local parks. N. [last edit 3/17/2006 10:23 PM by nobody - edited 2 times]

| | | You might really have a killer res if that underground auditorium in Queen E. Park ever burst. Had a peek a few years ago when they were renovating? or upgrading, decommisioning? Maybe it's all back together now with more depth? Just back from an excursion to a smaller but interesting half demo'ed reservoir near the World famous Butcharts Gardens north of Victoria, the 'City of Better Tunnels and Gardens'. Took a few pics, will shrink em and post later, Honey I shrunk the JPegs...

| | | The lower water pics are from today, the others were taken a few weeks ago. It looks like they are draining it to complete the demolition. Why? Wish I knew, maybe with everyone drinking fancy bottled water we don't need reservoirs anymore :) They were meant to all be full frame like the first, am just learning the image sizing and stuff.

| | | There are about half a dozen reservoirs on the hill, makes for a good gravity feed system. None would be a good UE target. Reservoirs are kind of cool though. I did an abandonned one in Sydney that was 99% dry. I also managed to do an old active one. Built of brick and full of crystal clear water. Gorgeous.

| | | I live next door to the reservoir you mention at the beginnign of this thread. It is a non-starter. I have seen the maps of it too. Nothing to see in there unless you want to scuba dive in a big box. There is a tiny room at the door with some meters etc in it but nothing you would not see in a closet.
If you ever come to Calgary then email Satan@uea.ca and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :) |
