Yeah man! Ducttape and period pads!

I'm telling you, I closed a gash on myself with ducttape.

duct tape is fine for small wounds, but it usually works better when you have gause underneath. It is far more reliable then most medical tape on the market, and I know a few guys who used some as butterfly bandages.

The deal with duct tape is using it correctly, and not applying directly to the wound, but rather use it to secure something else to the wound.

The only thing about Duct tape is that it hurts like HELL when you take it off some fuzzy guy like me. Duct tape would be a great adhesive though especially when used along with the feminine hygiene products already mentioned above. I always carry whats called a paratroopers first aid kit. You can get them at most surplus places and pretty much everything in there can be replaced or freshened with supplies found at any pharmacy and most grocery stores. For such a small kit, it's pretty comprehensive for most minor first aid situations. A major key to the effectiveness of first aid kits is that EVERYONE in your group needs to have one. There's nothing worse than needing something and it's not there because you used it on someone else earlier. (Something I learned serving two combat tours in the military). Eye injuries are always possible and can be very serious without actually puncturing the eyeball itself.

On an interesting note, the most serious UE injury I've ever heard about was where one guy on here fell and ran some sort or steel rod into his abdomen. He didn't realize the severity of the injury until he got home and found out it was a pretty nasty puncture wound that should have been treated in the field then evac'd to higher medical care.

Eye Bandages?

What is the chance you will be impaled in the eye... I honestly doubt an experienced explorer will need half the stuff you have on that list.

then again you've been a member here for what... not even a month?

-----

The only First Aid supplies I use for an injury are the stuff I find on site... such as 40 year old gauze pad that worked fine, and prevented the infection.

Hmmm...You'll probably be the the one who gets popped in the eye by a shovel handle sticking out from a shelf and you'll probably loose the use of that eye completely because you're so smart and those of us that have been actually trained in EMS procedures are so damned stupid, and you're so damned experienced, huh? If you ever come to Texas, please don't call me wanting to go out 'cause you might get someone killed.

Sorry 'bout that, everyone. I've got a kid his age and the Dad in me just took over for a sec. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Duct tape on wounds ? haha - that has got to be the second most eccentric first aid idea I've heard in a while, well, here's the first - my commander once announced publicly he always carried a few menstrual pads in his car, as they could absorb blood better than any bandage ... might be something you want to add to your first aid kit ...

Actually, I used Duct tape and paper towels to make a temporary bandage when I sliced my hand open at work. Held beautifully until I got it tended to. (Our first aid kit was in desperate need of first aid itself considering the morons I worked with at the time used the stuff inside to play pranks on each other.

And yeah, it did smart when I removed it.

This thread reminds me, I have to get my First Aid/CPR certificate renewed this year.

Thanks for the advice ScarsandStripes and welcome aboard!

It's not so hard to get a to the bone laceration...you can bleed to death fast. You got me thinking, my favorite good for everything item is J&J self adhesive cloth tape, 1.5 inches width. Getting a blister, bad cut on a finger, twisted wrist, field preassure bandage; I swear by the stuff. Always bring at least a pint of water no matter how long you think you'll be out. Wet cloth (H2o + windex) in a baggie for cleaning stuff is a must for me.

I've heard of blacksmith's using it for on the spot burn treatment. Damn I figured with ammonia-d windex must be even better! I don't normally use it for wounds, but will wipe down cuts with it in the field. No adverse affects. Saliva works surprising well, don't it on deep wounds. Try it on small scratches, they heal faster, and don't get infected. Brush your teeth twice a day. lol.

My science teacher (ex- Army sniper) said that they would always carry tampons with them, as they are excellent for plugging bullet holes. However, due to the unlikeliness of you getting shot while UEing, I'm not sure how useful that could be...

This is the way the world ends.

So girls in the field really can save your life. That's a great idea; an internal pressure bandage. Might save you from a knife, or deep puncture wound if the object gets pulled out. The little string hanging out will remind you to go to the ER.

I know that tampons can stop bleeding very well. I mean, that's what they are meant to do, right? I say go for it. And duct tape? I wouldn't use it for anything other than light wounds because if further treatment is needed, it may interfere and harm more than it will aid in healing.

If you need to stop heavy bleeding don't worry about heal time, and pissing off the ER doctor. Stop it anyway you have too; duct tape, fingers...avoid torniques! Use direct pressure.

Add some super glue to the wilderness first aid too. Can be used in place of stitches, you don't need no stinking Dermabond. Super glue works fine. I've used it to close a deep cut on the bridge of my nose, healed fast, and left no scar.

You can (at least with some dunno about all since I am a guy and don't sit there playing with tampons all the time) unroll them and use them as gauze.. but I don't care how they are constructed you can at least shred it into a small sheet then duct-tape the sucker in place

I don't think of it much because I ALWAYS wear glasses, here's why. You never will lose an eye to fungal infections; it's rare but does happen to contact users only. Always wear good sunglasses in the sun. UV is real, and does not play well. The biggest reason I them is that glasses have saved me from serious eye injury many times. I know two people who impaled an eye, lost an eye. Splashed acid, and damaged their cornea, needed a transplant. Replacing a lense is so much more fun than going to the ER with something sticking out of it. Oh yeah, if your dumb and don't wear glasses/safety glasses and get impaled...don't pull it out!!! Immobilize the object, leave it in place; another great use for duct tape! Just think of a ballon. Wear safety glasses whenever any possible eye hazards are present, sorry.

Another benefit of tampons is how compact they are. They come in those plastic/cardboard tubes which makes carrying 5 of them in your pocket no sweat.

I'm sold. I'm buying a box. Scented, or non-scented? I think I want to keep that spring time freshness with my wounds.

Go with the scented! Maybe the scent will help deter security as you hobble off the site to call for an ambulence!

Don't get the scented, coated anything. Buy the plain hygienically sealed kind. They also work wonders for bullet holes.
