| | | Okay, I have a question for all of you. I live in Seattle, which in addition to having some great abandoned sites, also has a gang problem. Does anyone have any thoughts on UE in places that may have squatters, junkies, or gang members? To add to this, has anyone ever had any run-ins with non-security-official people at a site? An obvious answer is to not go to sites that might have hostile people, but in Seattle with it's high vagrant population, it's hard to know. Any feedback would help Thanks - Ca53

| | | This has been discussed around the forums quite a bit; do a search on squatters or vagrants. The main concensus seems to be that, with squatters, if you leave them alone they'll leave you alone, or might even enjoy the company. However, if you are asked to leave, don't argue -- just leave. As far as gangs go... I guess this is where those casing, listening, and sneaking skills come into play. Try to watch the site to see if there's any activity. If you're concerned but absolutely must see what's in the place (and most of us are that way), while you're there, try to walk as quietly as possible. Also, don't walk regularly like a normal person; stop and start randomly like an animal might do. Finally, make sure you listen carefully... the few times I've thought I've heard something in an abandoned building (and I knew people had been there before due to the tagging) it's always been a false alarm, but don't let yourself get complacent. As far as personal defense, a 4D maglight is not to be messed with. Unless of course you're dealing with multiple gang members, and they are all packin'... | | | With one exception, it's unlikely in the extreme that you're going to find gang members in any of the "typical" (if there is such a thing) UE locations. The exception would be clandestine labs and grow patches, but in the pacific northwest, most of the meth labs are somewhere in the woods, and the local pot production is pretty much small-time, local consumption stuff with no gang involvement - they get theirs from Canada. If you're really concerned about the problem, though, PM me.

| | | We recently almost had a run in with some gang members. We were at the Marine Stadium and had just made our way to the top of the seating when one of our guys spotted 2 people making their way over the first perimeter fence (there are 3 on that side). We weren't too concerned about it as we knew the place real well and they didn't look very intimidating. We probably could have made some weird noises and scared em out. We kept watching, and within a couple of minutes another 6 or 7 people jumped the fence and started making their way in. We became a bit concerned then as there were 4 of us and at least 8 of them, and one of the guys with us told us that his brother mentioned that some gangs use the place for their initiations. We weren't positive they were gang members, but it being that large of a group, we didn't want to risk it. We waited a few minutes till we were sure they were in the building because we didn't want to run into them coming around a corner and scare them. After we were sure they were inside, we quickly and quietly made our exit with them not having a clue we were there.
"Because there's no possibility of real disaster, real risk, we're left with no chance for real salvation. Real elation. Real excitement. Joy. Discovery. Invention. The laws that keep us safe, these same laws condemn us to boredom. Without access to true chaos, we'll never have true peace. Unless everything can get worse, it won't get any better." -Chuck Palahniuk |

| | | i never had problems with gangs...just bums and cult members...most of that was back in my early days of exploring. After that i learned...like Servo said be cautious stop and listen, observe the building before hand ect. If your goin to a place that you know is risky def go with a bigger group and have some kinda protection. I read some of the NYC explores web sites and they are goin through meth labs, shooting galleries, chop shops and all other kinds of crazy places. I never really read about them having and major problems...dunno how cuz usualy drugged up junkies arnt the nicest people.

| | | As Servo said, a 4D maglight isn't to be messed with. But if you are as paranoid as I am about gang members, I usually bring a fairly heavy pipe with me. The cops in my town are real lazy, they don't really give a damn about what you have (as long as its concealed), just don't wave it around. My suggestion: get either something heavy, or something that can stun someone for a fair amount of time (i.e. 5 seconds), and not a stun gun, for they require a close range to operate correctly. Whatever you get make sure it's legal. I can't stress this enough. IF you get caught with a stun gun or mace, and it's illegal, you're in deep trouble.

| | | Thanks for the input. Based on the things I've read, I think that I'm gonna stick with my trusty 4-D Mag, and a can of legal mace. With any luck I won't need to dent my Mag or use the mace.

Actually, I think it's all in Tacoma. There was a Meth lab down the street before it was busted.
