I am currently displaying these ten images in a private gallery in Pittsburgh. Since everyone here on this forum is more of a focused/educated audience, I was hoping to get more feedback on the images - something different than what I heard from the general public.

The exhibit features my work as part of a series that documents industrial workers and locations in Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh's history. If anyone is nearby and wants to see the work hanging up, let me know, we're planning another reception in early April. The ten images were selected from the year's worth of exploring the Pittsburgh region. Thanks in advance for comments or criticism.

beautiful.

"morning rays" really stands out to me
im almost certain you're using a filter
if not, very interesting nonetheless
what kind of equipment was used in this photo? and the others?

"stairs to the second floor locker room" also catches my eye
even the object sitting on the stairs sort of points you towards the darkness at top of the stairs

until i saw "rake of light"
absolutely amazing. the lighting is perfection
it sort of draws you in to the picture, and emphasizes certain small portions of it
yet, it still shows you enough to really interest you
but still not enough to really know where the hell you are

the only photo i don't care for is the grafitti, too much clutter, aah. although you mentioned this is documentary photography, therefore i'll try to bite my tongue accept it as "part of the package"

1. All images were shot with a 300D Canon Rebel w/kit lens.

2. No filters were used. The star effect is from: a.) shooting at the max aperture (probably f/22) on the lens, and b.) the light coming through the holes in the roof.

3. I usually use a tripod in conjunction with the camera's 10 second to avoid shake.

I really like the idea behind the exhibit. I'm getting my master's degree in public history, and I've been thinking recently about different ways the academic community could recognize the efforts of UE, and I think a exhibit like this is a great example. I wish I could see the before pictures. Are you doing this in conjunction with a university or historical society? Sorry I can't offer any feedback about the photographs, I think they're stunning, but my own camera skills certainly make me unqualified to judge. I just wanted to tell you how much I liked the concept.

Not in conjunction with either. The gallery showing was initially to participate in the city's Gallery Crawl which intended on drawing people into the Cultural District (to expand their awareness of the Arts I suppose). The gallery owner liked the work and decided to keep it up afterwards for a few additional weeks.

Amazing! The only one that seemed too dark (and it could just be me) is "Bare Bulb". But other than that..wow! Amazing work, and congrats on your gallery show too. If I was closer I would love to see the real images.

Picture#1 : I think this picture is really nice because it shoes that tagging often ugly can be seen as art. I think the drunken figure has nice character, good work.

Picture#2 : Ward hallway is an excellent photo. The perspective straight on, the shadows and the beams of light stretching over the floor, not too much to say, I might try tossing it in photoshop and playign with the levels see if it helps it any if not, still a nice photo.

Picture#3 : This picture is excellent. I think the thing that bothers me is it's so clean haha. The specularity on the wall is crazy too, the only thing I could think of is a closer shot on the sink.

Picture#4 : Not much for me to say on this one, the composition is nice, and the amount of texture that is seen in this shot is great, no complaints.

Picture#5 : I think I would try cropping out the left side of the pic and getting more of the tower in the shot?

Picture#6 : Beautiful picture, the star effect is really cool, the shafts of light, I love this photo.

Picture#7 : This photo is really nice also, I think it almost seems to tell a story, makes you wonder how the sign got bent haha.

Picture#8 : This may be the only one I am not a big fan of. I think it's a little to dark for my likings. I think if there is texture in the metal maybe try to get it to show if it was simply that dark, then I guess not much I can say.

Picture#9 : Rake of light is really nice because you got a really nice perspective on the shot, and it shows the snow or dust all over the ground, and obviously the light peering in. again nice work.

Picture#10: I LOVE this photo, it's so awesome. By far my favorite one of the gallery. I think it's composition is nice, and the texture on the rope against the sky it's beautiful.

Great photos. Black and white definitely works really well with all of them.

I love the soft lighting in "White Sink & Black Tiles".

"Crane Line" is a really interesting photo. It's different than a lot of things I've seen. I like the feeling it gives.

"We have to show these men and women freedom by enslaving them, and show them courage by frightening them." "At the time, my life just seemed too complete, and maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves." "This was freedom. Losing all hope was freedom."

morning rays ...is that fort pitt steel casting???

Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time.

Hey. thanks for starting this thread. i am currently getting ready for a show of my work, and i like looking at what other people have shown.

This looks like an amazing show, i only wish i could be there to see it.

I was wondering if you would take pictures of you stuff on the wall, i am interested in seeing how you have decided to display all of this wonderful work.

And if you dont mind me asking, what size are these, and how much are you selling them for.

Morning Rays, Ward Hall and Crane Line are the only ones that do anything for me for some reason. They're all great photos, but those are the only ones that strike me.

On another point, what kind of colours were in that building? Just dull grey or was it all sorts?

This show was actually one year ago, but the write up is still on my site at http://www.southsi.../sssb/exposure.cfm The prints are 16x20's mounted on 3/4 inch black gator board. The images have a clear laminate over the top to protect them. I had $300 on each image.

Can't quite remember colors. As a black and white photographer, I usually focus on lights/darks, lights and shadows, etc. It's not fair to say that most places are drab and dreary because to a color photographer that is an entire palette of colors to work with.
