The danger in old farm houses is the possibility of animal feces lying about, which can be extremely dangerous if inhaled. A woman in Alberta died over the summer from inhaling mouse feces while doing some spring cleaning in an old family barn.

Are you referring to hantavirus? Nasty stuff. Not common, but not unheard of. Mouse droppings, saliva, and urine. Inhaled. 40% mortality. Early intervention improves chances of survival. Can be anywhere mice are within affected regions. Campers beware of this too. You aren't going to wear a respirator everywhere inside/outside...life isn't safe. Be more worried of lyme disease, more common, and while seldom fatal it's not a fun ride. Mice are vectors for both of these diseases. More info on hanta: http://www.cdc.gov...iseases/hanta/hps/

That's exactly what I was thinking of, thanks for reminding me of the name. While hantavirus was the primary concern I thought of, I figure inhaling any feces can be bad for your health.

Good point. Eating feces is not high on my list of fun things to do at a site. There are times you really should wear a respirator. If not used correctly though, with the appropriate filter(s) it may provide inadequate protection. In heavily contaminated areas more gear/precautions are needed.

Good ones aren't cheap. If your stirring up that much dust you better start worrying about what else you have on. If you don't wear a disposable jumpsuit sealed at the ankles/wrists/neck you'll be bringing it home with you. If you inhale at home it's still dangerous. It's best to avoid stirring up dust, rather than feeling safe with a respirator. You must be clean shaven for it to work, and it must fit correctly. I try to go on windless days, after rain so the sites are damp.

Very true blackhawk, I think very few people have actually had a proper fit test or take the proper decontamination steps to prevent from taking the stuff back home with them or the fact that a lot of things can pass through your skin and eyes.
It was in September, we saw their silhouettes fade away, outlined on the horizon against the rays of the setting sun. |

That's what we are talking about. It doesn't matter WHERE you inhale it. Clothes, camera bags, shoes,etc. that are contaminated pose a hazard if taken off site. Some things like beryllium you better limit your exposure to zero.

Heh. I just picked mine up from Canadian Tire, I believe. There are more than a few members here with that particular brand (AOSafety), so I assume it's fairly widely available.

That's all the company ships them in. And the retailers won't break boxes around here. Plus my wife and I'd be set for a while. Two resp. two filters = 4 each 6 months or so.

I was just wondering if there is any site that has cheap respirators. Im pretty tight on cash right now. At my work we had the MSA Safety Works respirators with P100 filters and I really liked them. I was checking out online and they are like 30 to 40 bucks. I know that i dont want a crappy respirator but are they all that expensive?

There are many types of the respirator which can use the P100 filters. You may want to try the 3M Brand, it's the cheapest one. 3M 6100, 6200, 6300 are small, medium and large.

| | | | I don't take chances. I paid around 45-50 dollars for a standard issue Israeli Military gas mask and filter. It can stop anything from mustard gas to asbestos particles to mold and dust. I would also, like said before, wear a sealed suit and be sure you don't bring the shit home with you. Don't skimp on this, there is some nasty shit out there. be careful.
