Elevator Keys

I've read in a few places that it's easy to make a key for opening elevator doors from the outside out of a coat hanger, but so far my attempts to do so have been met with only failure. Does anybody have any advice on how exactly to build one or pictures of an elevator key made of a coat hanger? Thanks.

Examine it / feel it up - you have to catch the cable going diagonally across the upper halfish of the door. it has to be a moderatly large hook type thing... it might be easier for you to call the elevator, tie a string to the cable you have to tug, feed it through the hole, and send the car away & pull.
In short, reverse engineer the elevator. Your a smart one. Or your not and you dont deserve to be in the shaft anyways, save for thinning the gene pool.

Here's quite a bit of info on elevators, getting into the shaft, and manipulating elevators. I searched alot for making the key, but didnt find anything too informative.

To open the single door elevators ( the ones with the small hole in the upper corner) you can use a easy to get elevator key. Another easy way to get into an elevator is to get a fireman's key. Most city's use a standard fireman's key. Below is a picture of the door key mentioned in the beginning of the post.

Fox and I just tried using a coathanger for an elevator key to get into a shaft at our church, and it didn't work very well. however, we only tried once, and we'll be trying it again. piplnr65656, where could you get one of those?
we'll keep you updated.

I got the elevator door key from a hotel I was staying at. I got the firemen's key from a friend that works for a elevator company.

Could someone post a picture of an elevator with that "little hole" in the corner that is being mentioned that you can use to gain access with a coathanger?

If your ever being chased through a building by someone and feel the need to use the elevator: Press both the floor number and the close door button at the same time, it will send you straight to that floor, and not stop on any others on the way.

It may go straight to that floor. I've tried it... well... too many times. And it typically doesn't work, It needs to be enabled and methinks this one has gotten to popular.

And no, you are not getting
a picture of an elevator with that "little hole" in the corner

Look at an elevator. Really. now about 6ft high 1/2 way across one of the doors (left), theres a little metal ring. The end. Google Images.

BTW I did the string thing today. I think I may have trapped some people in it for a min though. But it's thier fault for using elevators at 1am,

A bit hostile are we? I was just curious because the elevator I am currently checking out does not have one of those holes, it has a key in on the side of the wall that enables the touch-buttons.

How do you build that thing out of a coathanger? And what does it do? stop the elevator or open the doors? or both?

Sounds like your looking in the car for these holes. They are on the outside doors for gaining access to the shaft. They will be on the bottom two floors. If you can't find them, you're probably not looking hard enough. As for the improvised hanger keys, you're on your own.

Thank you sidler, you said what I said [Edit: what I meant to say], only better. The keys pull on a cable/rod that releases the brake that keeps the doors shut. They can then be opened manually, by pulling / pushing / frictioning. Opening them should stop the elevator. The best way to build a key would be at the elevator, so that you can be sure it works and understand the principle. Also, I don't know the specifics, and just use a piece of string to do the trick.

There is always enough room at the top of an elevator shaft so that you don't get squished right? I'm planning on elevator surfing soon.

Sure always room for one more. The third rail isn't really hot. It's OK to stare at lasers. You can pass your fingers in through of an oxy-acetylene torch flame if your quick enough with no harm.

J_P you ever see the movie mission impossible.

The guy on the elevator shaft got pwnd by the elevator. You will not prevail roofing the elevator to the top, unless you have axcess into the elevator from the top, which you better be sure of

Theres enough room at the bottom right? I could hang onto the bottom of the elevator and ride it up/down. And there is a ladder that runs along side right? There is enough room on the sides to not get clipped by the dropping elevator?

Yeah, people do stupid things at 1am like work for a living. [/sarcasm]

Pretty foolish messing with the elevator especially when there's the chance of endangering or entrapping someone else.
