from http://world.nycsu...rg/canada/calgary/

Rumors are abound that during the 80's, when the LRT was being planned, a section of tunnel was actually dug in preparation for the downtown section to be placed underground. That plan was deemed too expensive by the provincial government, and today, the line runs at-grade and controlled by traffic lights, instead of railway signals underground.

The South Line now curves off 7th Avenue, and into a tunnel. When the train is in the tunnel, face backwards and look to the left. If you look carefully, you will see a bellmouth that would lead to the rumored section of dug tunnel if the concrete wall is demolished.

from http://www.barp.ca...gary/anderson.html with pictures!

Originally, Calgary Transit had planned on building the C-Train system in a subway format where the trains would run underground underneath 8th Avenue SW/SE instead of above ground on 7th Avenue. In 1980, the new City Hall municipal building was voted by Calgarians to be built on already existing government owned land instead of leasing office space from private businesses. Design of the new 14-storey municipal building included a parkade to be built underground, including at the time, a subway for the LRT system to be constructed. Unfortunately because the LRT system was already $23.3-million over budget, underground LRT in Calgary was put to a halt and all that was ever built was the shell of the tunnel. The view in the third photo on the second row above shows the split in the tunnels at the east end of the tunnel. Beyond the ends of the splits in the tunnel is the tunnel that leads north and south along the Anderson LRT line. The tunnel on the left of that photo would lead to the future Whitehorn line and the tunnel on the right would lead to the existing Anderson line. From the tunnel that connects downtown to the Stampede station, you can see the one side of the tunnel curve to meet this tunnel that was suppose to be built. Not many people knew about this tunnel even existing until it aired on CFCN News/CTV Calgary back in 1998 with John Jensen of Calgary Transit that answered questions during the interview. The only way to access this tunnel is through an access door inside of the Municipal parkade and down a ladder.

There is a very, very short length of tunnel behind the wall which is indeed accessed from City Hall. Some UEAers did it with permission from the city a few years ago but it hasn't really interested us enough to try to get back in. There are accomodations for stations and tunnels in some office tower basements, but the actual tunnels don't exist.

Calgary's original LRT plan included an extensive underground network spanning from downtown to 17th Ave and Marda Loop. Sadly there was nothing behind that vision so we're stuck with the crap-ass transit system we have today.

It's also under 8th ave, not 7th ave. And barely under 8th ave, since the bulk of it is under city hall, therefore not under the current transit line either. There's been talk recently of turning it into an art gallery, because they actually built some ugly metal "trees" on 8th ave whose "roots" extend down past the altitude of the tunnel, so it can really never be used as a transit tunnel.
